The main thing: choose a suitable model, take into account your parameters and make a pattern. After which all that remains is to sew the outfit. Next, we’ll find out how you can sew summer sundresses of various styles with your own hands for girls, girls, plus-size women.

If you have never tried to sew clothes yourself, it doesn’t matter. Even an inexperienced seamstress can sew the simplest sundresses, especially since some of them can be created even without a pattern. It is enough to have the skills to make a straight stitch on a machine and a zigzag seam.

To create a pattern, prepare a large sheet of paper, a measuring tape, a ruler, and scissors.

Summer sundress - DIY pattern

Before you begin the process, take a centimeter and measure your parameters:

  • OG - breast volume
  • ОШ - neck circumference
  • OT - waist circumference
  • OB - hip circumference
  • DP - shoulder length
  • DI - sundress length

Start constructing the drawing from the left corner of whatman paper or any other paper for patterns.

  1. First draw a corner, lay down the length of the product from the shoulder to the bottom
  2. Set aside the length of the sundress symmetrically next to it in the right corner - this will be the second part of the pattern (back)
  3. Make the pattern without any allowance for the fastener. The front of the sundress will consist of one part
  4. Next, create a pattern for the upper yoke, decorate the neckline and shoulder line on the front part of the pattern and the back
  5. Make an armhole for the arms, design the cut with a smooth line
  6. Also draw the bottom of the product in a semicircle

To sew a beautiful dress for the summer, you do not need to have specialized education or dressmaking skills. Also, old school marks received during drawing or mathematics lessons do not matter, because there are patterns for summer dresses and sundresses for beginners and with their help you can create beautiful clothes with my own hands. To do this, just do some calculations and transfer the pattern to the fabric.

How to choose the most suitable style?

Before creating a pattern for a summer dress or sundress, choose the most suitable style, taking into account:

  • features of the figure;
  • desired outfit silhouette;
  • material used.

For example, thin girls can afford to wear almost any dress: tight-fitting and loose-fitting, regardless of the degree of stiffness of the fabric. In this case, when making patterns, add a few centimeters to the circumference of the hips and chest, especially if you are using hard material. Thanks to these tricks, the dress will turn out to be quite loose, and the skirt will emphasize fragility and slimness.

For those with curvy figures, it is better to sew items from stiff fabric that does not drape well, and choose outfits of a close-fitting style. If you add too much stiff fabric at the hips, the dress will look baggy and add even more volume. Such increases can only be made using thin fabric that drapes well. Long dresses with a little flare at the bottom look great.

For girls with pronounced shapes - large breasts and convex buttocks, you can safely sew fitted knitted dresses. Such a product will be able to “sit down” correctly, emphasizing the beauty of its shape.

DIY summer dresses and sundresses: patterns

Necessary materials:

  • pencil with ruler;
  • tracing paper;
  • centimeter;
  • a thin piece of soap or chalk;
  • scissors;
  • textile;
  • ribbon or beautiful rope;
  • pins;
  • paper or old wallpaper.
  1. First you need to draw a regular rectangle. Its dimensions depend on the length of the outfit, as well as how fitted the dress is. The length of the back should match the front of the product.
  2. Then you need to sew the seams located on the sides, shaping the upper part of the product as a drawstring.
  3. All that remains is to insert a ribbon inside the drawstring, which will then be tied at the shoulder.

Such simple patterns summer dresses and sundresses can be used to create a fitted outfit. To do this, you need to take stretch fabric, since it fits tightly to the figure. If there is no such fabric, then you can fit the dress by bending the line of the side seams at the waist (in the photo this is indicated by a blue dotted line). In this case, you need to sew an invisible zipper near the waist.

  1. First you need to cut a rectangle, the length of which can be more than two meters. In this case, you need to take into account your own dimensions, as well as the desired “thickness” of the folds. The height of the rectangle is affected by the planned length of the outfit.
  2. The dress has only one seam, located at the back.
  3. To create a neckline, you need to make a small incision in the very center (about 10 cm).
  4. The upper part of the fabric is decorated, as in the previous model, by pulling two ropes or ribbons into the drawstring. The ends of these ribbons need to be sewn in at the back, and at the front they should go to the very center. It turns out that when putting on a dress, you will tie them around your neck.
  5. You can use most of the ribbon as a belt, tying the dress just below the chest.

The main thing when creating this model is to choose the appropriate material. The fabric should form soft folds and also be thin enough. Knitwear, satin, several types of crepe, and silk have similar properties. It is enough to try the fabric to the touch: when it flows, forming folds, as if flowing, then you can safely buy it.

  1. When sewing summer dresses and sundresses with your own hands, making patterns is very simple: you need to take a T-shirt of a suitable size and trace it on the back of old wallpaper. You can begin to draw your outfit around the resulting outline.
  2. If the left half is slightly different from the right, it doesn't matter. You can draw one half first, and to make both sides symmetrical, simply fold it in the middle.
  3. Those with large breasts or pregnant women should make the front part of the product a little longer, because it will ride up a little in the front, which will make the dress look unsightly. It's best to make the front longer and trim off the excess during fitting if the outfit will fit well.
  4. After drawing the pattern, you need to cut it out and transfer it to the fabric.
  5. The shoulder and side seams are first basted by hand for fitting: if the dress fits well, then you can sew them with a machine.
  6. It remains to process the armholes with the décolleté area. To do this, the edges are beautifully curved inward. You can purchase bias tape to finish the neckline.

You need to choose fabric for such an outfit according to the same principle as for the above-mentioned model. The material used must be thin enough. If you choose a fabric that is too stiff, you will get a trapezoidal sundress that will “stand up like a stake.”

Beach dresses and sundresses will help you be irresistible on vacation by the sea. You can sew an evening or casual outfit without a pattern in just an hour.

Quick knitted dresses - 2 ideas

There are very simple options for creating a summer wardrobe. For beginners, this is just a way out. It’s easy to sew a dress using a T-shirt or T-shirt instead of a pattern. You can use this item of clothing as the top part of a new thing.

If you like this idea, get started now. To have everything at hand, place next to it in advance:
  • T-shirt;
  • knitted fabric;
  • scissors;
  • thread with a needle.
The idea is to sew 2 flounces of matching knit fabric to the T-shirt. To sew a dress with your own hands without a pattern, measure your hips and multiply the resulting value by 1.5 or 2.

If you have wide hips, it is better to make the flounces less fluffy and multiply the hip volume by 1.5. If they are narrow, then feel free to multiply by 2.

Sew each strip of the future shuttlecock on the side and hem the bottom. Gather the top of these parts onto a thread with a needle. Distribute the flounces evenly. From the same fabric, cut a strip, the length of which is equal to the circumference of the bottom of the T-shirt, and the height is 2/3 of the height of the shuttlecock, and also sew this auxiliary part on the side (let’s designate it as “H”).

Place the gathered flounce right side together with the face of the bottom of the T-shirt, place a strip of fabric just cut out (“H”) between them, and pin it in place. Sew at a distance of 7 mm. Finish all 3 edges of the seam with one overcast stitch or using a serger.

Now you know how to quickly sew a dress and you can make another one. That's it.

To do this, cut the T-shirt at the waist; if it is wide, then sew it in at the sides first.

Measure your waist, add 5 cm, divide this value by 2, denote it as “A”. Now multiply “A” by 2, you get the number “B”. Draw a trapezoid on the wrong side of the fabric, folded in half, with the top = “A” and bottom = “B”. Connect the sides of this figure with straight lines. Cut, leaving an allowance of 2.5 cm at the bottom, and 1 cm at the top and sides. From the same fabric, cut out a wide belt equal to your waist plus 3 cm for a loose fit.

Sew the side seams. Sew the belt to the top of the skirt, slightly cinching it. Then sew the top of the waistband to the bottom of the T-shirt.

Hem the bottom of the skirt. Open the pockets, stitch them in place, and then the dress is ready.

Evening dress in an hour

A T-shirt will also help create it. If you want to make a dress that is colorful, then take a T-shirt in a rich color.

Place it in front of you, cut off the top of the bodice, and rip out the sleeves. For now, put aside two large canvases, which will soon turn into a back and front evening dress. As you can see in the second photo of the collage, each sleeve needs to be turned into a rectangle. To do this, cut off their rounded shoulder lines and side parts and unfold them.

As a result, you have 2 rectangles: front and back yoke. You can see how to position them in the third photo. The fourth shows how to sew the yoke to the front, stretching it slightly. So that when you release the pieces, the top of the front will be slightly gathered. Decorate the back in the same way.

Take the elastic band, stretch it a little, and measure the top of your chest with it. Make sure that the elastic fits well - does not press or fall off. Stretching it, sew it to the top of the product.

To ensure that the elastic is distributed evenly, fold it in half. Pin one part to the shelf and the other to the back. You can divide it into 4 parts with pins and pin it not only on the sides of the dress, but also in the center of the front and back.

Useful and enjoyable work is over. If you want to learn not only how to sew a dress with your own hands without a knitwear pattern, but also other light outfits made of silk, chiffon, crepe de Chine, then check out another idea.

In the first model, the already known T-shirt serves as a pattern. Place it on the fabric folded in half crosswise. Pin together and mark the center line. Draw the fabric along the top and underarms of the T-shirt, make the bottom flared. To do this, place a large ruler from the right armpit diagonally, and from the left to the left, directing the ruler in the same way.

Make the bottom arched. For large breasts, this line should be more curved outward than for small ones.

Cut, leaving a seam allowance on all sides. Along the neckline and armpits - 5 mm, for shoulder and side seams - 7 mm, for the bottom - 2 cm.

If the tank top stretches and hugs your body when you put it on, make the top a little larger than that. Then the dress will not end up being too small.

Sew side and shoulder seams, tuck and hem the bottom. The neckline and both armholes are finished with bias tape or strips of fabric cut diagonally. You can make such a wonderful summer sundress.

Patterns also help to sew a sundress with your own hands. For the next model a very light drawing was used. It consists of three parts:

  • hem;
  • straps;
  • belts
Based on the presented pattern, you can vary it at your discretion, for example, by increasing or decreasing the length of the sundress.

Redraw the pattern, place all its details on the wrong side of the fabric, outline. Cut with allowances of 1 cm, and for the bottom - 2 cm. Cut out all the elements, here's how many you should get:
  • hem - 1 piece;
  • straps - 4 pieces;
  • belt - 2 parts.
To determine the size of the hem, place the beginning of the centimeter in the center under the chest, lower its reverse edge down, see how many cm the desired length is. Wrap a measuring tape around the thighs and make an allowance for the wrap. This is how many cm will be the width of the hem.

You will determine the length of the strap if you place the zero mark of the tape on the point under the chest, then direct the centimeter towards the neck and stop it behind the neck at the vertebra. The length of the belt should be such that it is tied at the waist and in the back with a bow.

To make it easy for you to sew a sundress with your own hands, follow the step-by-step recommendations.

  1. Fold and hem the first and second sides of the hem.
  2. Place 2 parts of the belt on the front side, turn the edges inward by 7 mm, iron in this position.
  3. Place the top of the hem panel between the two parts of the belt, and gather the hem slightly in front. Stitch.
  4. Place the 2 pieces of the first strap right sides together, stitch on all sides except the bottom, and turn the piece through. Make the same double strap for the second strap.
  5. Place the straps between the two parts of the belt on top, baste and stitch.
  6. Sew fasteners to the thin edge of one and the second strap, which will fasten at the back of the neck.
  7. Mark the bottom and hem it on your hands.
Now you know how to sew a sundress for the summer using a pattern. Your vacation wardrobe should consist of more than just these items. To make it complete, read how to quickly sew a pareo. At sea, this clothing is simply irreplaceable.

Pareo for the beach

Coming out of the water, it’s nice to throw on such a tunic or go for a walk along the sea coast in it. To sew a pareo for the beach, take light fabric.

Measure your hips, multiply this value by 2. Let's designate it as “C”. Now determine the length of the product. It starts in the armpits. Transfer these measurements to the fabric, cut out a rectangle using them, adding 1.3 cm on all sides. This is how much you will bend it and stitch all 4 sides.

Cut out 2 strips for straps. Sew them to two corners located on one large side of the rectangle.

To sew a strap, a strip of fabric is folded in half, wrong side up, and stitched on one small side and one large side. Next, insert a pencil into the remaining hole. Pulling the strap over it, she is turned onto her face.

All you have to do is put on the pareo correctly. To do this, place one strap over your right shoulder. Next, pass it in front, under your left arm, and bring it back. Go forward again and place the strap over your left shoulder. The lightweight fabric drapes well and beach pareo will look great on you.

You can quickly turn a large scarf into this piece of beachwear. To do this, just wrap it around the body and tie it in a beautiful bow at the top in front. If you don’t have a scarf, sew a rectangle from light fabric, trim its edges and tie it in the same way.

In the same way you can sew Beach dresses other styles, for example, this one. For needlework use:
  • textile;
  • braid;
  • scissors.

Take a fabric 1.5 m wide. Cut a rectangle out of it along the entire width; its length is the same as the length of your new thing. Find the middle of the rectangle, in this case it is 75 cm. Make a straight cut for the neckline.

If you want this beach tunic to be even fuller, then you can take a wider fabric or sew two pieces of it.

And in this example, you will need to make only 1 seam, which will be located on the back. Create it by connecting the canvas.

Hem the top of the dress so that 2 drawstrings are formed here - to the right and to the left of the neckline. Thread a ribbon through them. You will use it to tie the tunic around your neck. Use the rest of the braid as a belt.

Now you have beach dresses and pareos, so you can pack your suitcase and go on vacation at the seaside.

In the center of the upper edge of the rectangle we make a 5-10 cm incision. This will be the depth of the neckline. We design the entire top edge as a drawstring and thread two ribbons through it. Let's start with the simplest.

This option is the easiest to sew. A simple summer dress pattern is given below.

Constructing a pattern

The main measurement is the circumference of the chest or hips. You need to choose the largest value. In this description, the main measurement will be hip circumference.

You need to start building a pattern with a rectangle, the width (AB) of which = hip circumference multiplied by 1.4 ( necessary increase for folds). For fuller ruffles, you can multiply by 1.6. Height (length) = 65 cm (or required length).

The height of the frill = 12 cm (without allowances), and the width = width AB.

Uncover

1 item - dress, quantity - 1 piece;

Part 2 - frill, quantity - 1 pc.

Seam allowances on the short sides of the dress and 1 long side. The frills should be 1.5 cm, and at the top of the frill and the bottom and top of the dress - 2.5 cm.

All that remains is to sew the dress, which will not be difficult even for novice seamstresses.

How to sew

Sew a vertical seam on the dress panel. Process the cuts and iron. Fold the bottom of the dress, baste, then stitch. Fold the bottom edge of the frill and stitch. Place the frill along the top of the dress panel, baste, then sew as 1 piece. Fold in the seam allowances along the top edge of the frill and dress, baste and, leaving a small area open (for the elastic), sew. Insert the elastic, adjust its length and stitch the ends of the elastic. Sew up the open section of the drawstring. It is done!

Rice. 1. Front view of the sundress

Rice. 2. Rear view of the sundress

The sundress has a button closure at the front, but for convenience there is a zipper sewn into the back. The pattern on the large patch pockets completely matches the pattern of the skirt, so the pockets are almost invisible.

We continue the modeling. From point A, set aside 27-30 cm upward (depending on the size, you can always increase or decrease the depth of the cutout). Draw a horizontal line to the right 13-14 cm long. Set aside 1 cm from the armhole line and draw a new armhole line.

Increase on the bar: make an increase on the AB bar with a width of 5.25 cm (the finished width of the bar will be 3.5 cm). The strap is cut in two pieces, 4 cm wide. There are a total of 2 straps in this sundress, which are sewn along the back and fastened at the front with buttons. The length of the strap is about 50 cm, but for each size the length is determined individually.

Rice. 3. Modeling the front bodice of a sundress

Separately, re-seam the top edge of the front bodice, 4 cm wide.

Modeling the bodice of the back of a sundress

Model the bodice of the back of the sundress in the same way as the front bodice. All linear dimensions necessary for modeling are shown in Fig. 2. We remind you that depending on the size, the length of the back bodice may vary. You can independently determine the length of the bodice from the waist by measuring it along the back with a measuring tape.

Separately, remove the facing of the top back.

Rice. 4. Modeling the back bodice

The skirt for this sundress is cut in the form of a rectangle about 70 cm long and a width equal to the circumference of the hips multiplied by 1.6 cm (or 1.8 if the fabric is very thin). On the front it is necessary to add a 5.25 cm wide hem on each side. Since it is not possible to cut out the skirt panel without side seams (due to the limited fabric width of 145 cm), seams must be made on the sides and the center of the back.

How to cut a sundress

To sew a sundress you will need: about 1.8 m of satin, 145 cm wide, 1.4 m of viscose lining, concealed zipper, 11 buttons, 2.5 cm in diameter.

The cut details of the sundress are shown in detail in Fig. 5. All details must be cut out along the grain thread with seam allowances of 1.5 cm, along the bottom of the sundress - 4 cm.

Rice. 5. Details of the sundress cut

From the lining fabric, cut out the details of the bodice minus facings and the panel of the skirt with an increase of 1.4 to the hip circumference for gathering.

How to sew a sundress

Facing details, placket allowance and outer strap details. On the details of the bodice and back, press the side seams and seam allowances. Sew the skirt panels along the side seams, iron the allowances and overcast them. Gather the skirt along the waistline and determine the location of the pockets. fold, loosen the gathers and stitch the pockets.

Then gather the skirt again (to the straps), to the length of the waist circumference according to the measurement + 2 cm for freedom of fit, baste the skirt to the bodice. Make sure that sections of the planks are not gathered. Sew the skirt to the bodice. Press seam allowances up onto bodice and overcast. Sew along the back.

Fold the strap parts in pairs with the right sides facing each other (reinforced and non-reinforced strap parts), stitch along the short and long sides, turn right side out, having previously trimmed the allowances along the edges, the corners - diagonally, sweep the straps cleanly on all three sides, iron. Baste the straps to the back of the bodice according to the markings, adjust the length of the straps.

Sew facing details along the side seams and overcast along the bottom edges. Stitch the facings to the front bodice panel pieces with the short sides. Then fold the strips to the wrong side, stitch the facings along the upper edge of the back and front bodice. Cut off the allowances, fold the facings to the right side, and sweep cleanly.

Fold the allowances along the bottom of the sundress, stitch and iron. Fold the strips to the wrong side, bend them, stitch exactly to the edge and iron.

Sew loops on the placket and straps, and sew buttons along the markings.

IMPORTANT! If you decide to sew a model with a lining, the consumption of lining fabric is indicated above. Sew the lining parts and stitch them to the facings made from the main fabric. Next, sew the model as recommended above.

The sundress is ready, and you will shine in it! See you again at the Sewing School.

To sew Nice dress for the summer, it is not necessary to have specialized education or dressmaking skills. Also, old school marks received during drawing or mathematics lessons do not matter, because there are patterns for summer dresses and sundresses for beginners and with their help you can create beautiful clothes with your own hands. To do this, just do some calculations and transfer the pattern to the fabric.

How to choose the most suitable style?

Before creating a pattern for a summer dress or sundress, choose the most suitable style, taking into account:

  • features of the figure;
  • desired outfit silhouette;

Girls with pronounced shapes - large breasts and convex buttocks - can safely sew fitted knitted dresses. Such a product will be able to “sit down” correctly, emphasizing the beauty of its shape.

DIY summer dresses and sundresses: patterns

Necessary materials:

  • pencil with ruler;
  • tracing paper;
  • centimeter;
  • a thin piece of soap or chalk;
  • scissors;
  • textile;
  • ribbon or beautiful rope;
  • pins;

These simple patterns for summer dresses and sundresses can be used to create a fitted outfit.

Patterns of dresses and sundresses

Every woman's wardrobe should contain basic clothing models. A sundress dress is exactly the model that almost every girl has in her arsenal. There are many options for sundresses, models can be summer and winter, frivolous and business, everyday and festive.

Many are sure that the sundress was invented as an element of Russian national costume. In fact, clothing similar to a sundress was used back in Ancient Egypt.

The sundress came to Russia around the 16th century, most likely from the Middle East, since the very name of this style is of Persian origin. Initially, sundresses were clothing for the nobility, and it was an element of the men's wardrobe. Clothes were made from expensive fabrics, so they were inaccessible to ordinary people. Of course, men's models were not distinguished by excesses, they were not decorated with frills and ruffles, and were called the harsh word “shushun”.

But in the 17th century, sundresses finally and irrevocably “migrated” to women's wardrobe. Before Peter's reforms, these clothes were in the wardrobe of women of all classes. Of course, noble women wore models made of expensive fabrics and with richer decor, peasant women wore clothes made of homespun linen, but the cut of sundresses was approximately the same.

During the reign of Tsar Peter, sundresses were brought down to the level of clothing worn by commoners, while aristocrats were ordered to wear dresses according to European fashion. But during the reign of Catherine, the sundress was again elevated to the Olympus of fashion, however, then the models were sewn on a frame. But the sundress “a la russe” was also worn by French fashionistas of that time.

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of wars and revolutions, so women forgot about this wardrobe item for a long time. But in the second half of the last century, the sundress returned to fashion and continues there today.
