What material is the best backpack for hiking? Choosing a good travel backpack

At first glance, all backpacks are similar to each other - a kind of trunk with straps for carrying load on the back. They differ only in size, number of pockets, color. In fact, the design of a good backpack is quite complex and varied. And you can literally feel all the pros and cons of this or that design on a hike. Therefore, before purchasing a backpack, you should figure out what all these difficulties are and what features of the backpack you should pay attention to first of all.

Backpack volume

The first thing that usually catches your eye when choosing a backpack is its size. Or, more correctly, the volume of the backpack, which is measured in liters. Its size is usually embroidered with numbers on the valve or lower entrance.

The choice of volume depends, first of all, on the duration of the trip - the longer it is, the larger the backpack should be, because you will have to take more things.

For weekend hikes, a backpack of 40-50 liters will be enough. The same backpacks are also taken for climbing, since the main things remain in the camp.

For long hiking trips, choose backpacks with a volume of 80-120 liters for men and 60-80 liters for women.

For water, ski trips You will need large backpacks with a volume of 90-130 liters. After all, in addition to things, you will also have to carry inventory, and there are much more things themselves.

When choosing a backpack, it is better to take a larger one, since it can always be tightened to the desired size using zip ties. And if the volume is still not enough, you will have to use additional pouches. To do this, the backpack must have a MOLLE fastening system.

Backpack design

By design, backpacks are divided into three types: soft, anatomical and easel.

Soft backpacks. A regular fabric bag with pockets and straps. The main advantage of such a backpack is not heavy weight, up to 1 kg, since there are no weighting structural elements. Such backpacks are well suited for carrying light weight and volume, for short hikes. The owner must remember that the comfort when carrying things in such a backpack depends on the correct packing of things, since this is what achieves rigidity. Uneven load distribution can greatly affect a hiker's carrying comfort and endurance. The volume of such backpacks is usually small - up to 45 liters.

Anatomical or frame backpacks. The back of these backpacks has vertical inserts. As a rule, these are lightweight tubes or tires made of metal or plastic. They give rigidity, which allows the backpack to keep its shape and also helps distribute weight. It is quite convenient to carry cargo in such a backpack, so the dimensions can be large - up to 120 liters. In addition, such backpacks often have additional pockets, slings, and loops, which allows you to hang additional pouches that increase the useful volume of the backpack, attach a tent or, for example, trekking poles. No wonder this type of backpack is the most common among tourists.

Easel backpacks. main feature These backpacks have a rigid frame made of aluminum, metal or carbon fiber. This frame holds its shape well and also evenly distributes the weight of the load over the back and hips of the porter. At the same time, it does not matter what kind of cargo is carried, in what order it is packed in the backpack. Its weight will be distributed evenly, which allows the tourist to walk for a long time with a straight back. This backpack is indispensable when carrying heavy and oversized items over long distances. Using the fastening system, you can attach additional cargo to the backpack, for example, a canister of water or another backpack. Of course, a rigid frame increases the weight of the backpack itself, which can reach 3.5 kg, but at the same time it makes carrying the load more comfortable and safer for health, since it does not harm your posture.

Backpack material

It’s rare to see backpacks made of canvas or tent fabric anymore. 90% of modern backpacks are made from modern materials, the most popular of which are 3: Avisent, Oxford and Cordura.

Avizent- Russian-made fabric, also known as aviation tarpaulin. It was developed for the needs of the army to replace conventional tarpaulin. This is a thick nylon fabric with a very dense weave of threads, often with acrylic water-repellent impregnation. The fabric looks glassy, smooth, shiny. They are distinguished by excellent tensile strength, frost resistance and low weight. And also, at a small price.

Among the disadvantages, it is worth noting that if a hole forms, its edges crumble and the fabric can crawl, so the edges must be melted immediately. If the fabric is not impregnated, then it allows water to pass through. And in appearance it is inferior to other, more expensive modern fabrics.

Oxford– used for backpacks in the mid-price range. It is thinner and lighter than the avisent, and in addition, has a more attractive appearance. It is a nylon fabric with a special coating on the inside, which ensures the product is waterproof.
The fabric is distinguished by a special weave - “matting”. With such an interweaving of fibers, the fabric seems to consist of relief squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern. The density of the material depends on the thickness of the threads used and is measured in DEN (denoted D). Typically this number ranges from 150 to 1600. The higher the number, the thicker the thread and the denser the fabric. The most popular fabrics for making travel equipment are those labeled Oxford 210D, 420D and 840D. If the marking contains an additional letter designation, this indicates that the fabric is impregnated. The abbreviation PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, and PU stands for polyurethane compound.

Cordura- developed by Dupont for the US military department. Like Oxford, it is a nylon fabric, but denser and heavier. Polyamide threads have different thicknesses. Folded several times and twisted, they acquire increased strength. Thanks to the special interweaving of the threads, the strength increases even more; the fabric retains protective impregnations well, while maintaining the ability for gas exchange. The fiber density is 100-1000 denier, which is indicated on the labeling. The higher the value, the thicker and stronger the fabric.

Cordura is the most durable fabric with good abrasion resistance. She is not afraid of punctures and cuts, the edges do not split. Thanks to multi-layer impregnation, it has good water-repellent properties - water simply rolls off from its surface in balls. The fabric does not rot.

But there are also negative aspects. The fabric is quite heavy and stiff. It rustles when walking, so it is not suitable, for example, for hunters. Already at -10 ⁰C the fabric begins to harden, so for hiking in winter time also not suitable. And, of course, the price. This is the most expensive material among backpack fabrics.

Backpack color

When choosing a backpack, you should also pay attention to its color. Of course, hunters need an “inconspicuous” backpack. For them, depending on the type of terrain, backpacks in colors such as khaki, olive or camouflage are suitable.

For those who like to travel “savage”, extreme sports enthusiasts, and climbers, bright, cheerful colors are preferred. And not only because bright color lifts the mood. For these categories of travelers, there is a fairly high risk of getting lost, getting injured, or getting into another difficult situation. In these cases, it is much easier for rescuers to find a tourist in trouble by some bright spot of equipment, for example, a red or bright blue backpack.

Suspension system

The backpack's suspension system consists of a backrest, a waist belt and shoulder straps. The comfort of moving with cargo and the endurance of the tourist will depend on what system your backpack is equipped with and how correctly it is selected. When choosing a suspension system, you need to focus on the duration of the trip and the weight you can carry.

Back. Backpacks with a volume of 30-50 liters have a plastic insert in the back along the entire width of the back of the backpack. The plate gives elasticity to the backpack and the back does not deform when the backpack is very full.

Backpacks with a volume of more than 50 liters must have a special frame to stiffen the back, which will help carry the load without harming the spine. It usually consists of two elastic plates or tubes located parallel or in the form of the letters “X” or “V”. The structure is made of hard plastic or aluminum. Thanks to this design, the main load moves from the spine to the pelvic area. It is very important that the backrest is adjusted in accordance with the person’s height, otherwise the main load will fall on the shoulders and spine.

To prevent the plates from rubbing the tourist’s back, a pillow must be provided. And since the pillow fits tightly to your back when walking, it is important that it has a ventilation system. Trekking backpacks have special grooves in the back padding. The back of the backpack is made of well-ventilated mesh fabric or velor-type fabric (“Air Mesh”, “Air flow”). These fabrics allow your back to breathe and also dry quickly.

For easel backpacks, the hanging frame is an outer metal frame to which the backpack is attached. The frame separates the backpack from your back and transfers the load from your shoulders to your hips.

Belt. This part of the backpack, when properly designed, allows you to transfer up to 70% of the load from the shoulders to the pelvic area. If the main weight of the load falls on the shoulders, then compression of the spine will inevitably occur, back pain and body fatigue will begin. In addition, the belt secures the backpack, preventing it from dangling and “crawling” on the back.

The belt should be rigid on the outside and hold its shape well, and soft on the inside so that it fits snugly to the body and is comfortable. Therefore, the inside of the belt has wide and soft cushions. In a good backpack they are slightly curved. The thickness of the belt should be 8-12 mm, and the width should be at least 10 cm. The greater the load carried, the greater the width of the belt. You must also ensure that the belt holds its shape well and does not wrinkle.

The wide waist belt often has small pockets for small items: money, keys, phone. The belt buckle should be large, on a wide sling. It should be easy to unfasten so that if necessary, you can instantly remove the backpack.

Straps. The straps are responsible for the comfort of wearing the backpack. The optimal width for the average person is 6-7 centimeters. Narrower straps will cut into your shoulders, while wider ones will cut into your neck. The straps should have soft shoulder pads, and the inside should be made of soft, pleasant-to-touch fabric. U good backpack The shape of the straps should be S-shaped. Such straps fit better, do not restrict movement, and do not tend to slip off the shoulder. The straps taper towards the bottom and end in slings, which must be long enough to adjust the height of the straps to suit the height of a particular person. The straps are attached to the back either using double Velcro or buckles.

It is important that the straps have a chest strap, which is usually attached to a fastex type lock. The tie secures the shoulder straps so that they do not move apart, the load is distributed more correctly, and the shoulders are unloaded.

Important little things

We looked at the main elements of a high-quality backpack, on which not only the comfort, but often also the health of the traveler depends. When choosing a backpack, you should pay attention to even less significant, but also important elements that may be useful to you on your trip, or, conversely, will be useless.

Availability of pockets. Usually they store all sorts of small things, essential items and things that they forgot to put inside in a timely manner and are stuffed at the last moment. It is believed that the more there are, the better. But many experienced tourists prefer to abandon external pockets and, if necessary, use a fastening design. For example, several pouches that are attached to the backpack using the MOLLE system. They can be fastened or unfastened when they are not needed or when you need to reduce the volume of the backpack when passing, for example, through thickets. But on the other hand, hinged pouches stick out more than sewn pockets.

Valve. The top of the backpack is closed with a flap. It serves not only to protect the contents of the backpack, but can also serve as an additional pocket, and it is quite spacious - up to 10 liters of volume.

The presence of a "basement". This is a separate compartment at the bottom of the backpack. Mainly used for storing sleeping bags, wet tents, and shoes.

Accessories. Buckles, zippers, and adjusters, of course, must be durable and easy to use. In order not to be left without a buckle or lock due to their sudden breakdown, it is advisable to take a spare set with you on a hike. Therefore, the fittings should be standard.

Carrying handle. It is needed mainly for loading a backpack into transport.

Side ties. Helps regulate the volume of the backpack.

Availability of external suspension system. These are loops and slings with which you can attach a rolled-up awning or tent, skis and other equipment to the backpack.

Good tourist backpack can't be cheap. And it will serve for more than one season. Therefore, when choosing a backpack, consider every little detail and think again about which design elements are really important to you. And if you’re going to take a really good backpack, durable, comfortable, reliable, then it’s better to take it from well-known manufacturers, such as Tatonka (Germany), Tasmanian Tiger (Germany), Tactical Pro (Russia), Kiwidition (New Zealand).

Even in the most difficult conditions, the traveler needs to eliminate unnecessary problems associated with carrying the necessary things. The rating of the best travel backpacks will help you choose the model that is ideal for its owner.

Hiking bags and backpacks have been transformed and improved over the years and today, thanks to modern materials and technologies, there is a large selection of backpacks with their own characteristics suitable for each type of tourism.

Camping backpack

Equipment of this type allows you to carry all the necessary things without problems and comfortably. Hiking backpacks come in two types - for weekend hikes and so-called assault backpacks. The first type is intended for a short and not very difficult trip - for example, on a picnic, fishing, hunting, or in the forest to pick mushrooms. This backpack is not equipped with additional functions necessary for a mountaineering trip or a long solo trip. Main features of a backpack for weekend hikes:

  • small volume (from 20-50 l - women's backpack, up to 50-70 l - men's backpack);
  • simple design;
  • affordable price.

Assault backpack

So named because of its special design, which allows the most necessary assault equipment to be placed outside. Designed for small climbs, short hikes, but is designed for maximum extreme sports and is ready for severe tests. Externally, it has a streamlined shape and is not overloaded with a large number of external pockets, thereby eliminating the danger of them getting caught on protrusions or branches. Its features:

  • small volume (20-50 l);
  • high strength;
  • not afraid of loads and mechanical stress;
  • does not deteriorate under the influence of weather conditions;
  • light and comfortable.

Mountain Hiking Backpack

This is the most expensive type of equipment. These also include “clothing assistants” for extreme skiing disciplines, such as freeride (skiing or snowboarding outside special prepared trails) and backcountry (on foot ascent and descent on skis or snowboard also on unprepared terrain).

Features of this type of backpacks:

  • allows you to secure skis for carrying;
  • has many special pockets for ski equipment and a first aid kit;
  • special insulated drinking system;
  • back protection;
  • “Airbag” is a system for survival in the event of an avalanche.

Backpacks for trekking (hiking)

The most diverse type, with many options for designs, designs, various materials and individual features. They are distinguished by practicality, versatility in use, convenience, indispensable when hiking in the mountains or wooded areas. They have wide choose volume (50-70 l, 60-80 l, 80-100 l and more), and also differ in design. Thus, there are easel backpacks with a rigid back (having an external frame) and anatomical ones (with an internal frame).

Easel ones are less popular and are gradually becoming a thing of the past, but are still widely used in short hikes, as well as speleological and water expeditions.

Features of the easel backpack:

  • the frame is made of light alloy;
  • has a suspension system (wide shoulder straps, soft back, waist belt);
  • the ability to carry small but heavy items.

Anatomical backpacks, with a volume of 30 liters or more, are very popular; their designs come with soft and hard parts of the frame, complex and simple, and also with the possibility of customization (some parts of the frame can be detached). There are anatomical backpacks with an external frame, where the main elements are located on the outside, which provides additional ventilation to the back. However, this type is bulky, increases the load on the back and is very backward. In addition, the backpack configuration is inconvenient for packing large items.

Most modern backpacks, having complex designs created to suit all kinds of needs, may be at a disadvantage compared to simpler models that do not have a frame. And above all, this concerns weight and dimensions. Modern technologies, allow you to reduce the volume of things needed on a hike to ten kilograms, while a well-equipped backpack itself weighs about three, which significantly increases the total weight of the belongings carried on your back.

The frameless one is lightweight, its volume is no more than 30 liters, and the shape is a quite convenient and roomy bag. Moreover, it is made of durable material. Of course, there are also more spacious backpacks, which are something intermediate between a simple backpack-bag and a high-tech invention of our time.

How to choose the right backpack?

First of all, you should decide on its purpose, choose the type and then draw up the basic requirements for it. When choosing a backpack, it is easiest to navigate by the list of key criteria and selection parameters, including weight and volume, as well as price and functionality.

  1. The backpack should be universal so that there is no need for additional bags;
  2. Things should be easy to remove, especially from the middle and bottom;
  3. The presence of convenient pockets and compartments for easy access to necessary small items;
  4. The ability to transform the backpack by unfastening a separate pocket from it;
  5. Good ventilation in the back and shoulders;
  6. It is advisable to have a special cover to protect it from rain and dirt.

Which brand of backpack is best to buy?

Among the variety of manufacturers of tourist backpacks, preference is most often given to universal models, multisport, as well as inexpensive, budget options, however, low cost can lead to problems, which is unacceptable in extreme conditions. Therefore, it is worth making a choice in favor of reliability and quality and, of course, purpose. And you are ready to discover new horizons for yourself. And the first thing you need to do is buy yourself a backpack. But how to choose the right backpack? What is the difference between urban and hiking, men's and women's backpacks? What should you pay attention to when choosing? - Read about this below.

Main types of travel backpacks

A tourist backpack differs from a city backpack in one important detail - the hip belt. Thanks to it, 70-80% of the weight of the backpack is transferred to the pelvic area and legs. This belt is the main “secret” of hiking: after all, carrying a weight of up to 20 kg on one shoulders for several days is very tiring and can lead to back problems. Remember: almost the entire weight of the backpack is held on the belt, and your shoulders only hold it by the straps so that it does not fall back.

Backpacks for hiking and traveling, roughly speaking, are divided into two types of designs: soft and frame.

Frameless backpacks for hiking - pros and cons

Soft (or frameless)- These are backpacks with a soft back. In terms of the presence of ties, additional pockets and accessories, they are not inferior to frame backpacks. In such models, a mat (rug) is usually used instead of a frame.

Pros of frameless backpacks:

  • compactness: rolls up to minimum sizes;
  • lightness: they weigh two or more times less (compared to frame backpacks);
  • relatively low cost;

Minuses:

  • do not keep their shape - you need to know how to pack a backpack correctly;
  • limited load adjustment between shoulders and waist;
  • discomfort due to the large weight of the backpack;
  • limitation of large volume models.

Conclusion: An inexperienced tourist will most likely find a model with a soft frame not very convenient to use. For the first few years, it is better to go to the mountains with a hard backpack.

Frame backpacks - pros and cons

Frame (rigid)- backpacks with a frame system. In models with a small volume, a plastic plate can act as a frame, and in models designed for greater weight, the role of a frame is played by a system of arcs made of light alloy metals (for example, duralumin).

Pros of hard backpacks:

  • full adjustment of load distribution;
  • allows you to comfortably carry heavy weight for a long time;
  • large assortment - a choice of models for every taste and budget;
  • the ability to pack a backpack correctly is not critical;

Minuses:

  • relatively heavy weight of the backpack. On average 2.5-4 kg;
  • medium and high cost;
  • empty backpack it won't be possible to roll it compactly

Conclusion: Despite some disadvantages of these backpacks, this is the best choice for a novice tourist. Therefore, let's look at them in more detail.

Differences between women's and men's backpacks

The main differences are the shape and volume of the backpack.

It is known that female body has different proportions than men's. And that's not to mention individual characteristics each person. Backpacks marked “women” take these nuances into account and offer models that are anatomically better suited specifically for women.

The desired volume of a women's backpack is from 50 to 75 liters, a man's - from 75 to 100. In addition, the weight that women carry should be 20-30% lighter compared to a man. I have seen instructors who loaded fragile girls along with them with the words: “What? She also eats and sleeps in a tent. So let him carry it!” Therefore, I appeal to the male half: let’s also observe tolerance in the mountains and take care of our lovely ladies ☺

What to look for when choosing a backpack

Optimal backpack capacity for travel

As one experienced hiker said: “First you choose a backpack, and then the rest of the equipment that fits into it. But not the other way around." Therefore, the first thing you need to decide is the displacement (internal volume) of the backpack.

20-35 liters- a backpack for one-day hikes or climbs. Everything you need will fit here: raincoat, thermos, sandwiches, first aid kit and personal items. Models with this displacement are suitable, for example, for trips to the Carpathians, when you live in a comfortable house and go for a walk in the nearby mountains. In addition, they are convenient to use in the city or while traveling.

35-50 liters- storm or mountaineering backpacks. Considering the cost, such backpacks are usually used by freeriders, climbers or rescuers. Ordinary people may find it useful while vacationing at a ski resort.

There are also simpler models in this displacement range. For a novice tourist, this will be the best choice. Designed for 2-3 day light hikes.

50-100 liters- a full-fledged hiking backpack. It will fit everything you need for a hike from 4 to 20 days: warm clothes, a tent, a sleeping bag, boilers and food. And if something doesn’t fit, then there are special ties on the outside that can be used to secure a mattress, tent or other things. On the other hand, in this case you should carefully reconsider its contents: maybe you accidentally grabbed something extra?

100-150 liters- expedition backpacks. This displacement is suitable for complex sports trips or expeditions lasting from 20 days to several months. I walked with such a backpack - 140 liters - for 4 years and I can say with confidence: you need to try very hard to fill it to the brim. Even if you manage to do this, I do not guarantee that you will be able to carry such weight for a long time.

Back design of hiking backpacks

Standard backrest- This is a simple design of two metal rods with possible bends. The cost of such backpacks is usually quite reasonable.

Orthopedic back- a more complex system of rigid elements, which allows you to remove the load from the spine as much as possible. Not every tourist can afford such a pleasure.

Easel back- a rigid frame with a suspension on which a bag or other bulky cargo is attached. Used for expeditionary purposes. Such “mammoths” came across my eyes extremely rarely.

In most modern backpacks (except easel ones), numerous ties and slings located on the shoulder straps and hip belt allow you to correctly adjust the backrest. A store consultant or a Couloir guide on a hike can tell you the “correctness” of the adjustment.

Hiking backpack weight

The weight of frameless backpacks is from 1 to 1.5 kg, and frame backpacks are from 2 to 4 kg.

The most optimal weight is 2.5 kg. Although there are models - for example, from the German manufacturer Deuter - that weigh almost a kilogram more, they benefit in quality of materials and ease of use.

Pockets and additional features

When choosing a backpack for hiking and traveling Special attention You need to pay attention to the presence of pockets and other additional features that can greatly simplify your life in the mountains.

Valve- top lock that gives access to the main compartment. This element is necessary to protect things from moisture and reduce the volume of the backpack.

Additional pockets- a small but very convenient detail that will definitely help you out more than once on a hike. They are located on the main cylinder of the backpack, in the valve and in the hip belt. Their main function is quick access to a map, compass, water and other small accessories.

In addition, models with division into two sections or access to the lower section of the backpack are popular: for convenient removal of a sleeping bag or boilers.

Compression straps- are located on the sides of the main department. With their help, the volume of the backpack is reduced and equipment (trekking poles, sleeping mat or tent) is additionally secured.

External fastenings and hinges- used for fastening climbing equipment: carabiners, ice axes, crampons and ropes. Such backpacks are called “assault” or “climbing” backpacks. Some models are equipped with special mounts for skis, snowboards and avalanche equipment.

Radial backpack- in some models “made in Ukraine” - Fram Equipment and Turbat - the flap or outer pocket is detachable and can serve as a small backpack for radial trips to neighboring peaks. I have not seen this from foreign manufacturers.

Rain-cover - famous brands Don’t be lazy about adding rain protection to your backpack. It is a piece of water-repellent material the size of a backpack, which can easily be hidden in a small pocket. It is less common in budget models, but you should definitely buy it!

Accessories

When choosing a backpack, it is very important to pay attention to the quality of zippers, fasteners (clasps) and fasteners. After all, on a hike you don’t always have the time and mood to replace broken parts.

High-quality fittings are made in Japan YKK brand. If the above parts are marked “YKK”, then they will serve you for a very long time.

How to properly try on and buy a backpack in a store

The choice of backpack for hiking has been made, now all that remains is to purchase it. The ideal purchase option is to check a specific model on a hike. By borrowing a backpack from friends or taking it, within a few days in the mountains you will know for sure how suitable it is for you. And when you return to the city, you simply buy the same model in the store.

Otherwise, the backpack doesn’t fit or you haven’t been on a hike - take a tourist friend with you and together choose what you need. If you don’t have such friends, it doesn’t matter! After all, most sales assistants in tourist stores are people who have been to the mountains more than once. They will help you choose the best option, taking into account your height and body proportions.

Of course, on the forums there is a lot of information about choosing a backpack and a description different models. Selecting a backpack successfully remotely takes a lot of time and is very difficult to do.

Examples of good models, cost of a travel backpack

Travel equipment stores have a very wide range of backpacks. Therefore, you will find enough information about them. Price range - from 2000 to 8000 UAH (100-400 dollars).

Unfortunately, foreign manufacturers (Deuter, Osprey, Black Diamond, Pinguin) tie the price of goods to the dollar and not everyone can shell out more than 200 dollars for a good backpack. But there are several Ukrainian brands that have proven themselves well, and their price tags do not shock the buyer:

Terra Incognita- development takes place in Ukraine, and production takes place in China. The Snow-Tech backpack has been helping me for two years while cycling, snowboarding and on small hikes. Price range - from 1000 to 5000 UAH.

Fram Equipment- Kyiv brand of ultralight equipment. My more experienced fellow hikers use the Osh frameless backpack. I myself have been going with him for the 3rd month. Prices for a small assortment of backpacks range from 300 to 1700 UAH.

Beskid- backpacks by Alexander Volkov. You will get a variety of choice and quality of materials for quite fair money, and the simplicity of the design will allow a novice tourist to easily use these backpacks. The Terskey 110+30 model served me for almost 5 years and was perfectly preserved even after difficult sports trips. Price range - from 1000 to 2000 UAH.

I often saw several other domestic manufacturers - Travel Extreme, Commandor and Turbat - while hiking with other tourists. Their quality and ease of use are no worse than those mentioned above. Prices - from 600 to 2300 UAH.

Summary

Don't rush into choosing a backpack for hiking and traveling! The more comfortable the backpack, the more comfortable you will feel on your hike and get the most out of it.

And finally: if you are the kind of person who is constantly looking for something new for yourself, then no one forbids you to have several backpacks for different types tourism and travel;)

Personal experience - choosing a travel backpack

Of course, general information is useful, but much more interesting and useful personal experience in using different models. We will share ours, you share yours - this will help those who choose a backpack for a hike.

Personal experience: Taras Pozdny, founder and guide of "Kuloir"

Hi all! To be honest, I carried a lot of backpacks. I'm not sure I'll remember all the models and names, but I'll try. Go.

Self-made backpack- since I am a hereditary tourist, I started going on hikes with a self-sewn anatomical backpack. In fact, it was not much different from the current frameless ones. But it was different: it had hard straps that really rubbed your shoulders - you had to put a jacket under them, and the lack of a belt. Yes, we carried the entire considerable load only on our shoulders. And a very big thank you to my parents for having such a backpack, and not a “kolobok” or “easel one” - it was just hell.

Personal assessment: 7 out of 10 - adjusted for that time.

Travel Extreme Scout 65 and 80- this was the next step. Frameless, lightweight and comfortable backpack. Once upon a time they were made very well and even now there are a couple of “those” scouts in good condition. There are also several new ones purchased for rental. So, in terms of strength, they cannot be compared with the old ones. In the old ones everything was reliable and only after a year or two of active use could the fastex and zippers start to fly. In the new ones, everything is much worse: the fabric is more delicate - it quickly comes apart at the seams on the straps and sides, the zippers are very cheap - they jam immediately, the “dogs” are even worse - they fly already on the first trip, the fastex is also bad. In general, there are much more minuses than pluses. Pros: price, light weight, compactness, convenient pockets. When buying such a backpack, immediately stock up on a repair kit. And before they were reliable.

Personal assessment: 6 out of 10. Suitable for simple, rare hikes.

I was growing up and the scout had already become small. Since I was almost always the son of an instructor (father), I had to carry the largest backpack. We considered the 90-liter one to be a women's option, but we ourselves went with 110 and 130. A good volume that can fit everything, even a volleyball. And sometimes football. Previously, the ball was a mandatory hiking accessory, at the level of the boiler. But let's get back to the backpack. It was sewn well and did not tear. 10 years have passed since those times and these backpacks are still serving us. Sometimes fastexes fly, but this is not critical. High-quality, inexpensive and a little awkward - you need to know how to put together a backpack well. As for me, 110 liters is almost always too much. Worth buying at 90.

Personal rating: 8 out of 10 - a good model of a frameless backpack.

Travel Extreme Denali 90.

To be honest, I don’t remember exactly whether it was my first frame backpack or not. Let's start with the Denali, since I've worn out at least three of them. These are relatively new backpacks from Travel Extreme, framed and not very expensive. In general, the first couple of trips do not behave badly - they sit well and comfortably. But by the third, and maybe earlier, the filler in the straps cakes and they begin to press. Also, by this moment all fastexes and locks usually fly. They have proven themselves to be good backpacks for one or two hikes. But who buys a backpack for two trips? On the downside: poor-quality tailoring (threads stick out everywhere), the worst zippers and “pawls” I’ve ever seen, very uncomfortable side pockets, downright shitty fastex, stupid valve tightening system, low-quality materials. The advantages include low cost and that's all.

Personal rating: 6 out of 10. In fact, if you go hiking 1-2 times a year, then you can take it. But it's better to buy Commander. This is such a difficult task - choosing a backpack for hiking in the mountains.

Backpack Commandor Caravan 90 - old version?

I don’t remember the exact model, and now I can’t find anything like it on the website. Perhaps, only on this backpack did I understand what high-quality fastex and zippers are. Everything was done well, firmly and reliably. Not a single problem over several trips, but I already bought it used on Lesha’s tip - thank you. The only negative is the complete lack of pockets. I'm not used to this. Everything else is a plus: good straps and a belt, which after 5 years and a bunch of hikes have not gone astray (like Travel Extreme), very high-quality fastex, zippers and locks. Thick and strong fabric. In general, there were no problems.

Personal assessment- 7.5 out of 10. Downgraded due to lack of pockets.

Commander Sherpa 100

Another Commander's backpack. But I liked it much less than the previous one. Mainly because it is very large and the hip belt was too big for me. I simply could not tighten it as much as I would have liked, and because of this, the adjustment of the backpack was also lost. Zippers, fastex, fabric - everything is at a very good level for the money. Perhaps one of best models large budget backpacks. For smaller volumes, I recommend looking at the Caravan 90 and Expert 75. I haven’t worn them, but I’m sure they will be good.

Personal rating: 7 out of 10 - turned out to be too big for me.

Vaude Terkum 75+10

On this moment he goes with me everywhere. Definitely the best of all the backpacks I've ever worn. For some reason, I preferred Vauda over Deuter last time, and I didn’t regret it. Although this time I'll take Deuter. So, the main advantage of Terkum is its incredible convenience. I walked around Norway with him, carrying 42 kg (only 26 kg of food, such a trip took 18 days, just the girls and me. And you can’t overload them either). And at the same time, my back endured these torments normally. With any backpack from the past, this would be almost impossible. It’s been two years now that I’ve been carrying it with me everywhere - which means that it’s in use more than 180 days a year. And so far everything is great, although, of course, it is wearing out a little. I really like that there are two zippers along the entire backpack, through which you can easily access any part without repacking all your things. The only negative is the small volume. Now my tent is always on the side and it’s not a fact that all my things will fit. That's why I've been walking around with two backpacks for the last two years. Osprey is still 30 liters ahead. And I like this scheme, because from a small one you can get a camera, map, GPS and other necessary things at any time.

Personal rating: 9 out of 10. In general, I really like the Waude company.

Personal experience: Maxim Khomyakevich, guide of the "Kuloir" club

Terskey 110+30- “Volkovsky” backpack, which was purchased in 2012. Survived numerous hikes in the Carpathians, Crimea and Turkey.

Pros:

  • ease of design, adjustment and use;
  • large displacement allows you to accommodate bulky items and equipment;
  • low cost;

Minuses:

  • with a load of more than 20 kg it puts pressure on the shoulders;
  • inconvenient to use with low weight;
  • low-quality fittings (2012 model), which began to break after a couple of years.

Conclusion: a good backpack for beginner tourists, but I advise you to buy a model with a smaller displacement: 90-110 liters.

Snow-Tech 30- I constantly use the 2014 “Terra” model during radial excursions, cycling and snowboarding.

Pros:

  • quality of materials and fittings;
  • additional external mounts for skis, snowboards, additional things and special equipment;
  • ease of adjustment and ventilated back;

Minuses:

    the hip belt cannot be unfastened;

Conclusion: for the money and the possibilities of use, this is an excellent backpack. My only regret is that I didn’t buy the 40 liter model.

At first glance, it seems that choosing a backpack for a hike is very difficult, because in stores you can find hundreds various models. Let's figure out how not to get confused in all this diversity and choose a good travel backpack that is right for you.

The choice of backpack will primarily depend on the purpose for which you need the backpack. For a weekend hike (WHT) or for a long autonomous hiking trip in the mountains you will need absolute different backpacks. Let's consider the main parameters that you should pay attention to when choosing a tourist backpack.

What size backpack should I choose for a hike?

When buying a backpack, you should first decide on its volume. The longer hikes you plan, the more things and food you will have to carry, and the more space in your backpack you will need.

  • For day hikes or climbing (assault backpacks), use backpacks with a capacity of 20-40 liters.
  • For weekend hikes (2-3 days), the optimal backpack volume is 40-50 liters.
  • For longer hiking trips, the optimal volume of a backpack for a man is 70-90 liters, and for a girl 50-75.
  • For water trips or long expeditions, large backpacks of 90-120 liters are suitable.

There is an opinion that the larger the backpack, the better. We recommend choosing a backpack based on reality. A little extra volume isn't bad, but don't overdo it. The larger the volume, the greater the weight and price with other similar parameters.

Keep in mind that different manufacturers may measure the volume of their backpacks slightly differently. For example, my 80-liter Tatonka backpack feels no less than the hundred-liter models from Nova Tour.

Backpack design

Without going into small details, all backpacks according to their design can be divided into 2 groups: framed (with a rigid back) and soft (frameless).

Frameless (soft) travel backpacks

These are backpacks without any metal inserts in the back. This type of backpack does not hold its shape on its own. Packing such a backpack is a little more difficult than a frame one, but you can roll it up very compactly if necessary. Such backpacks weigh noticeably less than frame ones. Due to the simplicity of the design, the cost of such backpacks is also significantly lower than that of frame ones.

Frame (hard) backpacks for hiking

In these backpack models, a system of metal plates or arcs (highlighted in red in the figure) is built into the back, which follows the shape of your back (anatomical backpack) and keeps the shape of the backpack even when it is not filled with things. Such a backpack weighs noticeably more than a soft one. The cost of frame backpacks is also often higher than soft ones. But it’s the backpacks of this type We recommend them for almost any type of hiking, because they allow you to properly distribute the load on your legs and back and comfortably carry even heavy loads for a long time.

Backpack weight and materials

Everyone understands that the stronger the fabric from which the backpack is made, the longer it can serve you. But at the same time, the more durable the fabrics used, the heavier the backpack itself. It is important to find a balance that suits you. Try to choose a backpack with the least weight, all other parameters being equal. In our opinion, the optimal weight of a backpack for hiking is about 2.5 kg. Give preference to fabrics with water-repellent impregnations and Rip Stop technology (thickened threads are woven into the fabric at equal intervals and increase the strength of the fabric without increasing weight).

Belt and backpack straps

In any hiking backpack, special attention should be paid to the waist belt, because it removes 70% of the load from your back. The belt should be wide enough and soft, have adjustments in length and reliable fittings or clasp. The belt should rest on the body just below the waist, on the protruding knuckles of the hip joint.

The straps should be wide and soft enough so as not to dig into your shoulders when carrying heavy loads. Also, a good backpack should have a height adjustment system for the straps.

Additional options

Today, manufacturers are trying to lure tourists with a huge number of all sorts of bells and whistles. Let's figure out what will really be useful to us, and what “tricks” we will not need at all.

  • rain cape - will protect you from any precipitation and other bad weather, and will also help you not to get your backpack dirty when traveling by vehicle or under a tent awning. If the cape is not included, it can be purchased separately. Highly recommended!
  • The second (bottom or side) entrance to the backpack allows you to get the necessary things from the bottom without disassembling the entire backpack. This "option" can be very convenient in many situations, we recommend it.
  • Compression straps or simply side ties must be on the backpack. Their length should allow you to secure a rolled rug (or something else) under the ties without any extra effort.
  • Additional loops for rock equipment and other equipment. Here we recommend realistically assessing what equipment you will take with you, whether there is a need to attach it externally and whether there is an appropriate mount in the selected backpack model.

Flap and side pockets

On the one hand, side pockets are good. It’s convenient to store all sorts of small things in them, and it will be easier to find them. On the other hand, side pockets that are stuffed to the limit will make it difficult to pass through narrow places (a forest path or a reserved seat car).
