The Department of Physical Education was founded in 1920-1921.
At the early stage of development of the department, the main task was to prepare students for work and defense of the Fatherland.

Over the past 40 years, the department has been headed by:

  • Sotskov Evgeny Fedorovich from 1965 to 1973
  • Tiryaki Yuri Ivanovich from 1976 to 1998
  • Romanov Nikolay Vasilievich from 1992 to 1994
  • Bashmak Alexander Fedorovich from 1998 to 2019
  • Krasnov Sergey Viktorovich from 2019 to present

As part of the physical education curriculum, the department has outlined the following main directions of pedagogical activity:

  • educational: understanding the role physical culture in the development of personality and preparing it for professional activity;
  • educational: knowledge of the scientific and practical foundations of physical culture and healthy image life;
  • developmental and educational: mastery of a system of practical skills that ensure the preservation and promotion of health.

In progress physical education Students involved in groups of specializations in sports are solved some specific problems:

  • acquiring knowledge on the theory and methodology of sports training, organization and conduct of competitions;
  • mastering practical skills of refereeing competitions and working as a social instructor in sports;
  • improvement of sports skills.

IN sports sections, general physical training groups, and groups of youth sports schools are engaged in:

  • students - more than 600 people.
  • employees and residents of the village - more than 200 people.

The leading teams of the Samara State Agricultural Academy (volleyball, basketball, mini-football, weightlifting, cross-country skiing) take prizes in the Regional Universiade and the Spartakiad of the Regional Sports and Sports Sports Complex "Urozhay". Pupils of the Youth Sports School show high sports results in freestyle wrestling, boxing, football, handball and volleyball.

The problem of physical education of students was first raised by Professor V.V. Gorinevsky, who worked at Samara University at the Faculty of Medicine. On his initiative, in 1921, for the first time in our country, physical education classes were organized for medical students. And since 1926, in all medical higher education institutions educational institutions countries began to conduct practical classes in physical education in the 1st and 2nd years.

On September 27, 1929, the Council of People's Commissars adopted a resolution approving physical education as a compulsory academic discipline in higher educational institutions, so 80 years ago university physical education was officially legalized. And only in 1989, for the first time, a separate physical education program for students of medical and pharmaceutical institutes was developed and put into practice with a reasoned justification for its originality and purposefulness.

Until 1937, only 2 people taught physical education at the Samara Medical Institute. Since 1937, classes on medical supervision were included in the senior course program, and the department began to bear the name “Department of Physical Education and Medical Supervision.” The department was headed by S. N. Koltypin, who had a physical education and medical education. In the pre-war years the main attention was paid to the development motor qualities students.

In 1939, the Military Medical Academy was organized on the basis of the institute. The composition of the department at this time increased significantly.

During the war with Finland and Nazi Germany, there were a large number of hospitals in the city of Kuibyshev, and this gave direction to the development of physical therapy. Teachers from the Department of Physical Education were involved in this work.

In 1942, after the transfer of the academy to Central Asia, the medical institute was again organized. The head of the department of physical education is entrusted to N.K. Koleskina, who held this position until 1949.

In the post-war years, the leadership of the institute and the department paid great attention to mass sports work. University athletes actively participated in various competitions and won prizes in volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, athletics and many other sports.

Over the past years, the Department of Physical Education and Health has had different names and has been staffed by worthy, selfless people who sincerely love physical education and sports.

Sports base

The Department of Physical Education and Health has the following sports facilities:

  • sports ground with artificial turf (Gagarin, 20).

Sport is valued not only for the fact that it makes a person healthy and strong, but also for the fact that it elevates and ennobles the soul, that it is inextricably linked with the mental, aesthetic and moral development. As J. Tissot said: “Movement as such can replace all the medicines in the world, but not a single medicine in the world can replace movement.”

Sports and mass work

Department staff regularly conduct public events physical education and sports orientation. Football, volleyball, and basketball tournaments, which are held between dormitories, faculties and freshman teams, have become traditional. Since 2015, competitions began to be held according to the standards of the GTO complex, and since 2017, in shooting from laser rifles and pistols.

At the sports base of SamSMU, trainings of national teams in football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, sambo, judo and combat sambo, powerlifting, swimming, sports aerobics, fitness, and athletics are regularly held.

Achievements

Every year, students and residents of SamSMU achieve high results in the Russian and international arena.

Gudanatov Abu, a student of the Faculty of Medicine, and then a resident, was able to win gold at the 2018 and 2019 World Grappling Championships, became the European Grappling Champion three times and was repeatedly the winner and prize-winner of the Russian Championships. In 2018, Abu was awarded the certificate of Master of Sports of Russia of international class.

SamSMU national teams in fitness aerobics and hip-hop under the leadership of senior teacher Taisiya Vasilievna Zotanina regularly win medals at the Championships of the Samara Region and the Volga Federal District. The national hip-hop team became the winner of the Russian Championship.

In the Samara region, much attention is paid to the qualitative improvement of physical education, recreation and sports activities. The total number of people involved in physical culture and sports is increasing and amounts to about 10% of total number residents.
