Interpretation of dreams from

More than 37,000 men aged 19 to 26 woke up on May 11 to find their names on the Lithuanian army's conscription list. The first wave needed 3,000 recruits, 2/3 of whom were volunteers.

Some young people began to share their opinions on social networks and show their reluctance to serve in the army, which caused an indignant reaction from the “public.” They were called “coward”, “weakling”, etc. This negativity caught the attention of Beata and Neringa, and they responded to it creatively.

The women randomly collected 14 men between the ages of 17 and 28 and took their portraits. The guys were depicted in tears and military uniform. Beata and Neringa decided that it was good way show how dangerous gender expectations are: after all, it is generally accepted that men are rational, insensitive and aggressive.

The photographs are accompanied by quotes from the participants in the photography. The guys expressed their opinions about what it means to be courageous and how it relates to military service.

Jaunius, 18: Weapons in hands are not an indicator of courage.

Vytautas, 27: The army will not make a man out of you - if you are stupid, you will remain so.

Dominicas, 26: I choose what kind of person I want to be.

Rokas, 17: Masculinity is acting to achieve your goals and ideas, defending your values. I think anyone can go to war, but the army is not for everyone.

Vytenis, 18: I could join the army. Sometimes I lack courage and perseverance. The army is good if you can handle it. I was inspired by my friend, a girl who became a volunteer soldier.

Edvinas, 17: Is it possible to impose a choice on a person and call it freedom?

Danas, 28: In my opinion, the archaic times when a man had to kill a buffalo and drag it home are long gone. I think that the army as a whole is not bad, but not compulsory service. Especially when the government announced it so suddenly, without public discussion. You need to know about the introduction of the system at school. You need to grow up with the idea of serving in the army.

Denisas, 23: In a modern free society there is no place for violence. Those things that you choose of your own free will should be mandatory.

Martinas, 22: Masculinity is making your own choices.

Egor, 25: You only lose when you stop fighting.

Eustace, 18: Real strength is the ability to develop your own mind. Let's be strong.

Mindaugas, 25: When I was in school, compulsory military service was abolished. I was very happy then. But looking back, I realize that I would have served better then, and not now, when I had my own agency and when I created jobs for other people. I need to take care of all this.

You probably think that the military is either a hero or a killer, but few of us have actually taken the time to see who is really behind these imposing men in uniform. However, photographer Devin Mitchell has created a touching photo project called the Veterans Art Project, which allows you to explore what is on the other side of the uniform. Using Photoshop, Mitchell created images of military men and women in uniform, whose mirror reflections show that this is who they are and vice versa.

“The military community expressed interest in connecting through my art because many in the military feel like they are living a double life while in the military,” Mitchell says. “People who had never served showed interest in the project as an opportunity to gain additional information about the wide variety of aspects that lead veterans to feel this way.”

“The photo that really speaks volumes is that of Joshua Zitting and his other half Patrick Lehman,” says Mitchell, who is gay himself. “It reminds me of the injustice that one can serve and enjoy all the constitutional rights an American has while other men and women in other parts of the country who are like him cannot enjoy them, in part because decisions such as the latest decision by District Judge Jeffrey Sutton. Such judges fade in my eyes. Perhaps photographs like this will help this judge look at people better.”
