The Bell doll is a talisman against bad news. Master class on making a talisman doll "Voldai bell" Rag doll bell

If you believe at least a little in omens and superstitions, then the presence in the apartment textile doll will promote good “weather” in the house, good mood and positive emotions. Amulets, as their name suggests, are necessary in order to protect the owner from various troubles and diseases.

A souvenir amulet made with your own hands carries the thoughts and feelings of the person who made it. Do not forget to think only about the positive during the creation process and do it in a good mood. The process of making such a doll is quite simple, so even a novice needlewoman can handle it.

This doll can be given to a young family for a housewarming, it will help maintain peace in the house and bring joy.

The name of the doll “Bell” is due to the fact that there is a ringing bell hidden inside it and it rings when it moves. The bell is able to protect the owner from diseases and evil spirits. The doll can be placed in a corner, on a shelf, or hung on a nail.

Materials

Remnants of different fabrics are suitable for making, preferably bright colors. The doll can be made without using a needle or pattern. From scraps round shape The doll's skirt will be made; a square cut will be needed for the head and arms. A thin rectangular strip is used for a warrior, and a triangle is used for a scarf.

I got a tiny doll 10 cm tall.

For it I used the following cuts:

  • pieces of three colors - side length 22 cm, 20 cm, 15 cm;

  • square measuring 16 by 16 cm;

  • for the head you need scraps of fabric or padding polyester.
  • threads;
  • bell;
  • scissors;
  • for the warrior, a strip of fabric measuring 2.5 * 12 cm is used;
  • for a scarf - cut triangular shape size 15*21*15.

Initially, we take a bell and padding polyester. Instead of padding polyester, you can use scraps of fabric or cotton wool.

We form a ball from the filler and attach it to the bell.

Cut out circles from square cuts.

We place this structure in the center of the largest circle, wrap it in fabric and tighten it so that we get a voluminous head and skirt.

We fasten the other two circles in the same way - first with a larger diameter, then with a smaller one.

As you can see, we get a three-layer skirt and a blank doll’s head.

Now let's move on to shaping the head. To do this, take a square-shaped blank white, fold two opposite corners so that the corners touch in the center, and then in half.

We place the head of the doll in the middle of this blank and tie it with threads so that the white fabric is well fixed.

Use red thread. This color is more protective. Now the doll has acquired a more dignified appearance and has a face.

Forming handles

To do this, we bend the corners of a large white square inward, tie it around the edges, moving the fabric 0.5 - 1 cm from the edge and tie it with red threads.

The handles are ready.

How to make a warrior

Now let's move on to the warrior. We bend the edges of a long strip, attach it to the head and fasten it to the neck. To do this, we tie it with threads or, for convenience, you can use a needle.

A triangular blank is used for the scarf.

We put the scarf on the head, cross the ends under the arms and tie it on the doll’s back.

What do you think our lesson will be devoted to? That's right, the doll.

Today we will get acquainted with the history of the origin of the rag, folk doll. With its production.

We will also try to make a rag folk doll “Bell”.

Since ancient times, the doll has been a traditional toy of the Russian people. She accompanied a person from birth to death and was an unacceptable attribute of any holidays. Playing with dolls was encouraged by adults, because by playing with them the child learned how to run a household and acquired the image of a family. The doll was not just a toy, but a symbol of procreation, a guarantee of family happiness.

Most dolls in Rus' were amulets and trace their history back to ancient pagan times. They are executed from natural materials that are brought from the forest: wood, vine, grass, straw. And this is no coincidence, because the forest is the habitat of Russian people. Dolls made from birch wood are a talisman of family happiness. Aspen has always been considered dangerous for evil spirits, so dolls made on the basis of aspen wood are amulets for the home, driving away evil spirits from the home. The main feature of Russian folk dolls is a clean face, without a nose, mouth or eyes. Because according to ancient beliefs, it was believed that “if you do not draw a face, then evil spirits will not move in and will not bring harm to either the child or the adult.” A man-made toy served for our ancestors as a kind of tribal ethnic code, which indicated guidelines for the path of life. Looking at old dolls, we will notice how a chain of hidden symbols, characteristic of the mythological consciousness of the peasant and of Russian folk culture, appears in them. Therefore, there were no accidents in the making of traditional rag dolls - there was a certain meaning in everything. As a rule, rag dolls were the simplest image female figure: a piece of fabric rolled into a rolling pin, a face carefully covered with a white linen rag, breasts made of even rag balls, a braid and an ordinary or festive peasant outfit made of a rag.

The similarity is amazing, the roll call of dolls from different nations. They are united not only by their origin (playing dolls everywhere arose from ritual ones, came out of ritual), but also by universal human ideas and values: continuity in kinship, nepotism and parental care, in the veneration of ancestors.

The Russian rag doll includes several archetypes shaped by tradition. Column (column, log, lump), cross or sacrum, doll on a stick, knotted doll, swaddle, twist (twist, roll, rolling pin), stuffed doll-bag - all of them existed simultaneously in the 19th - first half of the 20th centuries in the countryside and small provincial towns. Each type is, in turn, scattered into many local variants characteristic of a particular area. Researchers drew attention to the fact that dolls from different regions, despite all their external figurative differences, are similar in the methods of making the internal fundamental principle. We noticed a common columnar shape of the body for dolls, which was rolled up so tightly that it looked like a sculpture made of solid material.

What archaic ideas were accumulated in the body of a rag doll? Despite all the ethnographic differences, everywhere the doll represented a mythological formula of the world order, reflecting the very essence of the universal circulation in nature and human life. The simplest three-part figurine, tied around the neck and belted, was built according to the scheme of the triune world: heavenly (upper), earthly (middle) and underground (lower). Cross-shaped dolls also pointed to the four directions of the world. Thus, their very design contained the universal number 7 - a symbol of the universe. Note that the everyday word “family” sounds like a spell: “I” is in the center of the universe, “I” must be repeated seven times - then there will be a family. This powerful symbolism is encrypted in the doll.

Homemade dolls were given to relatives and friends, cementing family ties: this is also one of the evidence of their sacred significance. In families, for their children, dolls are usually “spitted” from old rags. And not even because of poverty, but because of the ritual of blood intimacy. It was believed that worn material stored the ancestral power and, embodied in a doll, passed it on to the child, becoming a talisman. For dolls, the hems of women's shirts and aprons were most often used. It was these parts of the costume, in contact with the earth and thus absorbing its power, that had the greatest sacred meaning. It is noteworthy that the shreds for dolls were always torn along a straight thread, and not cut with scissors. It was believed that such a toy prophesied integrity without flaws or damage to its little owner.

Dolls were not just girls' fun. All the children played until they were 7-8 years old, while they wore shirts. But only boys began to wear portages, and girls began to wear skirts; their playing roles and the games themselves were strictly separated. While the children were small, their mothers, grandmothers, and older sisters sewed dolls for them. From the age of five, any girl could do such a nursery rhyme. Toys were never left on the street or scattered around the hut, but were kept in baskets, boxes, and locked in chests. They took them to the harvest and to gatherings. Dolls were allowed to be taken as guests; they were included in the dowry. They allowed the “young woman” who came to the groom’s house after the wedding to play, because people were married at the age of 14. She hid them in the attic and secretly played with them. Then these dolls were passed on to the children.

Almost all village holiday rituals were played out in puppet games. Most often, weddings are a particularly impressive, solemn and beautiful Russian folk ceremony. They took the game very seriously, maintaining the sequence of the ritual, memorizing and repeating the conversations of adults and the ritual songs they performed. To play, they gathered in groups in a hut, in a barn, or on the street in the summer. And each girl brought with her a box of dolls. There were up to twenty or more of them in the game: the bridegroom, the bride, the parents of the newlyweds, the bandage girlfriends, the cockerel girlfriends, the thousand, the carriage driver and everyone else, as expected at a real wedding.
Toy traditions existed in every corner of Russia. Every child had his own doll, starting with twisted dolls, which date back to the very origins of Slavic folk culture.

Currently more known 90 types various dolls:amulets, rituals and games.

There are a lot of dolls in each functional group; we will consider only some of the most interesting “representatives”.

First the folk doll became a subject of scientific and public opinion in the late 1870s. This is primarily due to the activities of an outstanding representative of Russian scienceEgor Arsenievich Pokrovsky (1834-1895) the founder of Russian ethnography of childhood. A well-known Moscow pediatrician, Doctor of Medicine, an honorary member of the Imperial Society of Lovers of Natural History, Anthropology and Geography, he took a most partial part in organizing the Anthropological Exhibition in 1879. In the panorama of “Education of Russian Peasant Children,” among the cradles, gurneys, walkers, and toys, a folk doll, mostly rag, took its place. The world of childhood first appeared as a value phenomenon of folk culture. His works were read and corrected by Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy when studying the experience of raising peasant children.

Ragdoll- an integral part of Russian culture, and in today's Russia it is experiencing a genuine revival. A man-made patchwork figurine now performs a new function: it becomes a living means of communication and familiarization with folk cultural experience.

Description of making a rag doll “Bell”

The protective good news doll Bell is also called the Valdai bell, since the birthplace of the doll is Valdai.

Today I want to offer you a master class on creating a doll - an amulet.
An amulet is an object that protects the owner from harm, protects a house or a person, brings love, happiness, every detail of the amulet has a certain meaning. Made with one's own hand, the amulet bears the imprint of not only protection, but also the potential of the thoughts and feelings of the person who made it. So, when starting work, stock up on good thoughts and a good mood.
The doll is easy to make, and its protective essence is clear to everyone: to bring joy and good mood to the house. The bell carries the law of harmony. The doll has three skirts like three bodies. And when the body feels good, the soul is joyful and the spirit is calm, when there is harmony between them, this is happiness. The ringing bell is reminiscent of festive triplets with bells ringing under an arc.
I will make a “Bell” doll. The doll's homeland is Valdai. This is where the Valdai bells came from. The ringing of a bell drives away evil spirits and illnesses. It was believed that if there was such a talisman in the house, then joy, fun and happiness would not leave it.
Previously, such dolls had common names: tornka and motanki. No needles or scissors were used in their creation. Since the person making the doll did not want the owner of the amulet to be exposed to a “stabbed” life. They were created from scraps of used clothing. And they retained the warmth of the thoughts of the person wearing it.
True, in this master class I will use scissors, because firstly: this doll is only a sample and will not serve as a talisman for anyone; and secondly: the fabric is new, and I can’t tear it by hand)))

For work we need (Fig. 1):

- good thoughts and wishes;
- cotton fabric(white);
- multi-colored scraps of fabric (cotton, chintz);
- red cotton thread;
- scissors;
- pencil;
- ruler

By giving the Bell doll, we wish our friend to receive only good news and be in joy.

1). We select and cut out three circles from fabrics of matching colors with a diameter of 24, 19, 16 cm. A square of white fabric for the face is 20x20 cm. It is better if the fabric is not thin. A little padding polyester for the head. Bell, thread for bindings. A scarf can be made and put on in two ways: the first is a semicircle of 16 cm in a circle, the second is a regular scarf made of thin fabric.

2). We tie a thread to the bell and tie it to the padding polyester. We place the padding polyester in the center of the large circle.

3 We tie it. Make sure that the center does not move and that the edges of the skirt are even.

4). Then we also put on the second flap evenly and secure it.

5). The third flap is similar.

6). We fold the white flap for the face with opposite corners towards the center.

7). We try on the folded flap to the head so that about 1 cm of hem remains below the neck. Not less.

8). If necessary, we adjust it and fasten it around the neck.

9). We design the hands.

10). We tie a scarf using the first method.

eleven). For the second option, we put a warrior on our head.

12). We put on a scarf and tie it under the arms.

13). If desired, tie a ribbon for hanging.

A great gift for friends and family!

In conclusion, I cannot help but mention one more nuance that experienced craftsmen always focus on for beginners. It is not customary to give or give away the very first ritual-protective doll, made with your own hands - a bad omen. Therefore, if you decide to practice the ancient Slavic craft, save the result of your first work. Just in case. Who knows where in this tale there is a lie and where there is a hint?

Dolls can be classified according to manufacturing technologies (twist-twist, skewer, fabric square, etc.). Possible according to rituals (for family, calendar, etc.). But, in my opinion, it is better to use the method of grouping by function or, if you like, by magic puppet power. It's much more romantic this way. I would even say more fabulous.

If you decide to try making a twist doll, remember one thing: it is very important to make it with good intentions, and good mood, and not only a spin, but any doll. When tying an odd number of knots or attaching one or another of its elements, you should say out loud good wishes and you only need to tie knots with red thread.

The parts of the doll were not sewn together, but tied together by winding them to each other. In some cases, they wound along the “sun”, i.e. from east to west, in others according to a special pattern, avoiding repeated turns. At the same time, they formulated wishes, chanted, sentenced or read malitvas (and only in rare special cases did they remain completely silent).

So our meeting has come to an end. Each of you holds in your hands a piece of history, kindness, and traditions of our ancestors. Today we looked into the past, but without it the future is not possible. Let the doll you hold in your hands be a toy for someone, a talisman for someone in later life. I want you to turn to the traditions of our ancestors as much as possible.

Thank you all for your work and our warm meeting.

One of the most popular toys are dolls. Not many people know that just a few centuries ago they were treated with great reverence. They were amulets against various troubles and helped people perform various rituals. One of the most important amulets was the bell doll, which protected the owner’s house from negative energy and helped bring good news. In addition to their purpose, such toys were made in order to protect a person or family from the evil eye, disease and the actions of evil forces.

History of appearance and use

Since ancient times the bell doll was used by our ancestors as a talisman. Over time, they gradually began to forget about it and stopped using it to protect their homes. The dolls were replaced with Chinese counterparts, which became more accessible and popular.

Nowadays, the popularity of amulets dolls has begun to grow again. This is due to increased interest in their history and the history of their ancestors. Nowadays it’s not difficult to find any doll in stores, but if you want to create a real amulet that will protect your home, then you should make a bell toy with your own hands.

The birthplace of this doll is Valdai. It was from there that the famous Valdai bells came from. Since the time of our ancestors, their ringing has been associated with the holiday. Bells were fastened under the arch of a horse's troika and hung on doors in houses and significant places.

The bell doll has three skirts, which symbolizes the kingdom of gold, silver and copper. The happiness that they protect also consists of three components: good for the body, calm for the spirit, joyful for the soul. Our ancestors decorated the carts that brought parcels and letters with Valdai bells. It was believed that they would help attract good news and protect against bad news. Over time, bells began to be attached to dolls, creating home amulets.

The bell doll symbolized not only the good news, but also the brownie’s wife. According to legends, she protected the house and helped with housework. As befits a talisman, it was placed near the entrance to the home. In its design they used as much red as possible, which was considered joyful and kind.

By giving a bell-amulet to your family and friends, you wish them happiness and comfort in their home.

Features of making a talisman

For maximum attractiveness you need to choose the right materials and tools:

  1. For the amulet you will need three different colored types of fabric. Choose bright colors and a variety of patterns. When making a doll, red fabric must be present. The squares of the selected fabric must be at least 22 cm, 20 cm, 15 cm long. In order for the doll to be more durable and hold its shape well, the largest piece of fabric should be the densest.
  2. For the amulet you will need a small piece of white fabric (12x2.5 cm).
  3. During the manufacturing process, red threads, braid, satin ribbons and lace will be used.
  4. As a toy scarf, you can use a triangular piece of fabric with dimensions of 15x15x21 centimeters.
  5. A lump of straw or a small piece of cotton wool.
  6. Bell.

When making any amulet, you should never use a knife, scissors or other cutting or piercing tools. All pieces of fabric can only be torn by hand.

Master class on making a bell doll:

Fasten the threads carefully and evenly (especially in the area of the intended neck). We choose the side that will become the face of the amulet and make it as smooth as possible.

Design of product parts

After you have made the base of the toy, you can begin to design its parts.

The first thing you need to do is decorate the head of the toy:

All amulets of the ancient Slavs never highlight facial features. According to existing beliefs, a toy with brightly highlighted features can cause harm and attract misfortune.

Master class on making hands:

  1. Take a square of white fabric and bend the corners inward. We tie the resulting workpiece around the edges with red threads.
  2. We retreat one centimeter from the edge and tie it with red threads. As a result, we will get hands.

Ritual of activation of the amulet

After you have completed the work of making the doll, you need to perform a ceremony to activate it. Without this, your amulet will be a simple toy and will not have protective abilities.

When creating a doll you need talk to her, share desires and thoughts. Thus, you invest your energy into the toy. Never start work if you have problems or are in a bad mood. During the manufacturing process, it is important to ask for help from the gods.

After all the rituals, you need to choose a spell that will meet your expectations from the bells. As a rule, people want to attract health, love, prosperity, and good luck. In these cases, you need to turn to God Perun. It would be useful to turn to the Goddess Lada when conspiring.

In order for you to successfully make a talisman and endowed him with magical powers, you need to take into account the following features:

Attention, TODAY only!

Yulia Knyazeva

On the eve of Maslenitsa, I decided to conduct a training session with the children on making a doll-amulet “Bell”. We prepared a conversation with the teachers about amulet dolls and a demonstration master class. The children gladly accepted the offer to make a doll themselves. And this is what came out of it:

Today I bring to your attention a master class on making a talisman doll.

A talisman is an object that protects the owner or the house where he is located from harm. Amulet made with my own hands, carries not only protection to its owner, but also the “imprint” of the thoughts and feelings of the person who made it. When starting work, stock up on good thoughts and a good mood.

The doll’s homeland is Valdai, where the well-known Valdai bells came from. The ringing of a bell drives away evil spirits and illnesses. If such a talisman was in the house, then fun and happiness would not leave it.

To make a doll we will need:

three multi-colored scraps of fabric (I used cotton, from which we cut out circles of different diameters (24, 27 and 30 cm);

rectangle of light plain fabric for arms and face 16X30 cm;

a colored piece of triangular shape (cut a square with a side of 25 cm diagonally into two parts);

threads for tying (cotton No. 10)

cotton wool or synthetic padding for the head

bell

Progress:

1. Roll up a ball of padding polyester and tie it to the bell not very tightly, so that there is a gap of about 1.5-2 cm. Cover the ball of padding polyester with the bell in the largest circle and tie it with thread.

2. Cover with a smaller circle on top and tie with thread.

3. We also put the smallest circle evenly on the head and tie it with threads.

4. Find the middle of the rectangle, cover the head with it and tie it with threads. We distribute the folds on the face so that there is an even face. The long ends are the future handles.

5. We form handles, make sleeves with cuffs. We bend the long sections inward, bend the long end inward and bend it in half lengthwise again. We tie the cuffs with thread.

Be careful when making the second hand, it should be the same length as the first.

6. We put on the scarf and tie it at the back, bringing the ends under the handles.

7. Straighten the skirts. The doll is ready. Good news and good mood to everyone!
