Diapers for newborns from 0 what. How to choose diapers for newborns - reviews with photos

Diapers, or pampers, have become a part of the lives of young parents. It seems impossible to do without them. They save a lot of effort and time on washing and washing the baby’s bottom if the brand and size of disposable panties are chosen correctly. Otherwise, a small diaper will cause discomfort to the baby, and a large one will cause urine to leak onto clothes and the crib. We will tell you in our article how to choose the size of a diaper for a child and what else to look for when choosing.

From this article you will learn

Size markings for diapers from different companies

There is no single standard for designating the size of diapers, so manufacturers use alphabetic or numerical designations, indicating them on product packaging. Mothers can find hygiene products in the store with the following markings:

  • N, NB, S, M, L,
  • 1, 2, 3, 3–4, 4, 5.

Diapers differ from each other in absorbency, waist volume, and panty length. But to differentiate indicators, all companies focus on the baby’s weight, so next to the number or letter size designations they indicate the approximate number of kilograms of the child’s weight, and sometimes the age. But the latter guideline is not accurate, since babies are born with different body weights and gain it individually as they grow older.

If we compare letter and number markings, as well as the weight and gender of newborns, the approximate ratio will look like this. (Important! The table can be scrolled left and right)

Letter designationDigital markingChild's weight, kgBoy's age, months.Girl's age, months.
N0 1,8–3 0 0
N.B.1 3–5 0 0-1
S2 3–7 1-5 1-6
M3-4 5–9 3-9 3-11
L4 8–14 7-14 8-16
XL5 From 11 to 2012 and older14 and older
XXL6 15–28 14-20 1 year
--- 7 15–35 24 and older3 years

Thus, the main guideline when choosing the optimal diaper is the baby’s weight. Age, gender, height do not play a special role.

On a note! Do not buy a lot of mini diapers, designed for weights from 5 to 7 kg. Newborns grow quickly in the first months of life; after a couple of weeks you will have to buy disposable panties one or two numbers larger.

When choosing diapers of any brand, also take into account the body size of the newborn. If your butt, tummy, legs and thighs are plump, take disposable panties with a small size reserve. For thin children, it is better to choose products based exactly on their body weight.

Or use the following chart to match your newborn's waist size to diapers.

Waist size, cmDiaper sizeApproximate weight of the child, kgAge, months
32-38 1 2-4 0-2

Each set of disposable underwear must include instructions on how to use the diaper and select the size. The procedure may be indicated on the outside of the box, usually in the corner. Knowing the weight of the baby, taking into account his fullness or thinness at the waist, hips and legs, choosing a diaper that is comfortable for daily wear is not at all difficult.

How to choose the right size

The packaging of diapers from all brands indicates the weight category of babies. But there is a difference between them.

Important! If your baby weighing 8 kg is suitable for a four (3, M) from the Goo.N company, then it is better to take a four (4, L) from the Huggies series.

Therefore, when choosing diapers, follow simple instructions:

  1. Compare your baby's weight and the kilograms indicated on the package.
  2. If your child weighs 6–7 kg, and the diaper is designed for children up to 7 kg, take a larger size.
  3. Please note that the size range in terms of weight characteristics overlaps nearby positions. For example, number 3 is for babies weighing 5–9 kg, and number 4 is for babies weighing 8–14 kg. Choose the option that will be more comfortable for the child.
  4. If the diapers of the selected company have markings to indicate the circumference of the baby’s waist and hips, measure this indicator with a tailor’s tape. It is better to do this after eating to get maximum tummy volume parameters.
  5. In pharmacies you can buy diapers individually. If you find it difficult to choose a size, take several options that are close in weight and compare them as you use them.
  6. Once you've made your purchase, put your baby's diaper on. You will notice the small size option right away: it fastens tightly, fits closely to the body, after wearing it, red stripes remain on the child’s bottom and stomach. Big size The diaper is determined by the huge gaps between the body and the edge of the diaper, the product moves out of place, the fasteners are fixed overlapping each other.
  7. Once you have decided on the size you need, you can buy diapers in larger quantities. We recommend making wholesale stocks of disposable panties after 6 months from the birth of the child. Many children wear numbers 4–5 until they are one year old.

On a note! So as not to wonder how to determine the size of a child’s diaper every time you go to the pharmacy or children's store for disposable panties, stick to one or two brands for constant use. It will be easier to avoid mistakes when choosing.

Answers to frequently asked questions

What diaper should you buy for an unborn baby?

Mothers in Russia and abroad prepare a dowry for the baby until the moment of birth. This is convenient and useful - after the baby is born, there will be little time for trips to the store.

When making a purchase in advance, focus on the standards. 70–80% of infants from 0 to 1 month weigh 3–5 kg. Take a small package of size 1 and size 2 diapers. Buy three and four later.

When choosing a diaper for pregnant mothers, you can rely on ultrasound data. The last examination is carried out at 33–34 weeks, the approximate weight is not yet born child will be known. Add to these data 100-150 grams for each week before birth, you will get the approximate weight of your baby at birth. Start from this number. For example, on an ultrasound (33rd week) the baby’s body weight is 2400 grams, by the 40th week he will weigh about 3200. This means you need to buy diapers from 3 kg - these are sizes NB, or 1–2.

Should I use diapers a size larger?

The larger the size of the diaper, the more moisture it absorbs. To save money, some parents prefer to buy a size 3 or 4 diaper for children who are underweight. It is not right. Using diapers larger than needed does not save money.

Firstly, their price is higher than 1–2. Secondly, the child is uncomfortable in such panties. The diaper slides down, does not fit tightly, and folds of excess material that rub the skin may form.

Your baby won't be wearing diapers for long. After 1–1.5 years, you will only use disposable panties at night, so you shouldn’t skimp on them.

What diapers are suitable for premature babies

Children born ahead of schedule, weigh less than full-term ones. When choosing diapers for this category of babies, this is the main difficulty. Regular size (number 1) is large for them. The companies Libero, Pampers, Huggies, Goo.N took care of them too. For newborns with low body weight from 2 kg, series with the digital marking 0 or the letter NB have been developed.

On a note! The Japanese company Goo.N produces disposable diapers with a fastener for babies from 1.8 kg (N), from 2.5 kg (NB). For premature babies this is the most convenient option.

Is it possible to use store-bought diaper sizes to make a gauze diaper?

Attached to the child's body using a belt and ties. His side edges needs to be stitched. The finished product is fixed with Velcro or held with a special elastic band. Therefore, to determine the size of the gauze version of the panties, you can use a diaper model from the store, but you should add 1-2 cm to the height, waist circumference and width of the middle part.

What characteristics of diapers, besides size, should you pay attention to when choosing

When buying the first diapers for a newborn, it is important to know the following:

  • Elastic parts in the waistband make the diaper more versatile in width at the waist. Don't forget that your baby's belly gets bigger after eating. The presence of expanding inserts is very important.
  • The opening for the legs should fit snugly against the body. On quality products There are inserts with rubber bands for the legs. This helps prevent leakage of liquid stool and urine.
  • Aromatic additives relieve unpleasant odor, but can cause allergies in the baby. Do not buy impregnated diapers for your newborn, especially in the first 2–4 months of life.

In addition to the weight, height and age of the child, when buying a diaper that is suitable for all parameters, you need to take into account the baby’s mood and his reaction to a new item in care. If your baby doesn’t fiddle with his diaper, sleeps peacefully, doesn’t have a rash, redness on his bottom or marks from an elastic band, then you’ve made the right choice.

Diapers for a newborn: how to choose?

Choosing a diaper for your baby is not an easy task.

Until recently, parents did not really trust diapers for newborns, worrying about the health and safety of their babies. After all, there were a lot of terrible rumors about them. For example, that they provoke cystitis, cause infertility in boys in the future, or cause bowed legs in a baby. However, numerous scientific studies have dispelled all these myths.

How to choose the right diapers for newborns? This task is not an easy one, because every baby is unique. And what suits one child may not suit another. Therefore, young parents will most likely have to use the “old-fashioned” trial and error method in order to gain experience for the future.

Criterias of choice

Of course, the trial and error method does not involve buying up absolutely all the diapers that are presented on the shelves of a particular store. There are a number of criteria by which high-quality products can be distinguished from low-quality ones. And they should be taken into account. Let's list the most important of these criteria:

  • Size. Any manufacturer must indicate the baby’s weight category on the packaging. This means that when choosing, you need to take into account the real weight of the newborn. A diaper that is not the right size will rub the delicate skin and cause discomfort in the baby. A diaper that is too large will also cause constant leaks.
  • Absorption rate. The quality of a diaper directly depends on how quickly its inner layer absorbs the baby’s feces. Remember: the baby’s skin in diapers should not remain wet. Otherwise, you will not be able to avoid diaper rash and irritation.
  • Softness. Good diapers are always soft. They are made of cotton material, pleasant to the touch and do not rub. A child in a diaper should be comfortable and comfortable to move.
  • Moisture release. To determine the quality of a diaper, you can conduct one simple experiment. To do this, press the napkin onto the filled diaper. The napkin should remain dry. If you see wet areas on it, then this indicates poor moisture transfer of this diaper, and therefore its poor quality.

The presence of reliable elastic fasteners and the absence of a sharp unpleasant odor will also become important criteria to determine a good diaper.

It should be noted that the quality of Japanese Moony diapers produced for domestic consumers is significantly higher than the quality of similar export-oriented products. It is not difficult to distinguish them from each other. The first ones depict the cartoon character Winnie the Pooh, and all the inscriptions are in Japanese.

A distinctive feature of absolutely all Muni diapers is their thickness. They are very thin, and therefore practically invisible under the child’s clothes. Soft elastic bands in the leg area do not irritate the baby's skin. Moreover, the diapers are made from hypoallergenic and safe materials without any aromatic additives or impregnations.

Merries

Like previous Mooney diapers, Merries were created by the Japanese. They belong to the so-called “small size”. And this is not surprising if you consider that Japanese children have smaller parameters (height and weight) compared to European ones. Merries diapers for newborns are equipped with a special “barrier” that additionally prevents leaks. They also have a fullness indicator, signaling to parents that it is time for the child to change the diaper. High-quality Velcro fastens easily and securely. Our rating of diapers for newborns is worthy of the Libero brand diapers. The products are of high quality and relatively affordable price. A reliable absorbent layer allows the baby's skin to remain dry and clean. There are no complaints about the quality of the material from which these diapers are made. They do not rub the baby's skin and do not cause any irritation. In short, Libero is another good option for a newborn.

How many diapers does a newborn need per day?

A newborn baby's diaper needs to be changed frequently.

Experienced parents advise not to buy too many diapers in advance. For the first days, 30-40 pieces will be enough. And then you can ask your husband or relatives to buy as much as you need.

Of course, the number of diapers used depends on how often they are changed. In the case of newborn babies, as a rule, no more than ten diapers are used per day (with a change interval of three to four hours). However, some parents put a diaper on their child only at night or before going for a walk.

Thus, the daily number of diapers for newborns varies quite widely and depends on a number of factors. Before, it is recommended to purchase several different diapers individually (from different manufacturers). Subsequently, you can decide which ones suit you best.

Should a child always be in a diaper?

Don't keep your baby in a diaper all the time

Each family has its own attitude to this issue. However, it is important to know that there are a number of situations in which the use of disposable diapers is not advisable. Let's list all these situations:

  • which may occur as a result of using certain brands of diapers.
  • Increased body temperature. The fact is that the diaper covers quite a large part skin baby, which disrupts the heat transfer process. As a result, the baby's body temperature may increase.

A modern woman cannot imagine caring for a small child without disposable diapers. One of the most important nuances when using them is the correctly selected size, which is determined based on the baby’s weight in kilograms. If the diaper is small or too large, the baby will experience discomfort and skin irritation and redness may occur. How not to get confused in the variety of products offered from well-known manufacturing companies?

What are the size ranges of different brands of diapers based on?

Four is the most popular size (number) of children's disposable diapers.

It should also be noted that the sizes seem to overlap each other. For example, if a two is designed for 3–6 kg, then a three does not start with seven, but is designated 5–9 kg. This is done because children with the same weight may differ in their build. Some babies are thin, while others are more plump. And if in the first option a toddler weighing 6 kg is still suitable for the second size, then in the second case parents should buy larger diapers, since a small diaper can rub the skin and cause inconvenience to the child.

The most popular brands of diapers today:

  • affordable Libero and Bella Happy;
  • more expensive and, according to numerous tests and reviews from parents, high-quality Huggies Elite Soft and Pampers Premium Care;
  • the most expensive and highest quality brands (according to numerous reviews) presented in Russia are Merries and Goo.n.

When deciding which brand to choose, parents are guided by many criteria, in particular the reaction of their baby’s skin. If the child is comfortable and has no allergies, then the choice was made correctly.

How to choose the correct size of disposable diapers depending on the weight in kilograms and the age of the child

The comfort of the baby depends on how correctly parents choose diapers. There are several rules that will help you decide on the size.

  1. Refer to the child's weight indicated on the package.
  2. If the baby's weight is closer to the upper limit indicated on the diaper packaging, it is better to take larger size, especially for boys, to make them feel comfortable.
  3. After putting the diaper on your baby and straightening all the elastic bands, pay attention to how well it fits. If the toilet item does not adhere tightly to the skin in one or more places, it means that you have chosen the wrong size and it will leak.
  4. If, in kilograms, the size of the diaper matches the weight of the child, and when you try to put it on, the sides do not meet or are difficult to fasten, then it is already small. It is recommended to replace it with a larger one.

There are times when diapers are the same brand and size, but different types(for example, regular and in the form of panties) fit the child differently. First of all, it depends on the design and model of the toilet item, so when purchasing, consider the following:

  • panties are designed for a certain size of the baby;
  • diapers with stretchy sides can be adjusted, the diaper can be fastened tighter or looser;
  • Some diapers don't have stretchy sides or elastic at the back, so they're a little wider at the waist and don't fit as snugly against the skin.

Is it worth using diapers one size larger than needed?

Some parents, in order to save money and avoid changing diapers longer, buy them a size larger than the baby needs. They naively believe that in this case the diaper will absorb more liquid, and the time of its use can be increased by several hours. Experts do not recommend doing this:

  • first of all, the child will be uncomfortable, because he will hardly be able to move his legs together, and the excess material will easily rub the delicate skin;
  • No matter how good the absorbency of a toilet item, if the rubber bands do not fit tightly to the child’s body, the liquid simply will not have time to get onto the material, but will flow out.

Therefore, doctors and diaper manufacturers advise buying hygiene products for children exactly in size.

Choice correct size disposable diapers is not a difficult task. To do this, you need to know the exact weight of your child and focus on the baby’s behavior and mood while using this hygiene product. If the diaper is chosen correctly and consists of high-quality materials, then the baby will be comfortable in it. The main thing is to monitor changes in body weight in order to adjust the number of purchased diapers in time.

Another difficult choice for a mother is which diaper to choose for her baby. In addition to the main brands that are always on TV screens, there is an incredible number of manufacturers of one of the main items of children's hygiene. Each company undoubtedly attracts marketers who entice with offers that cannot be refused. Where there is marketing, there is diversity, which means more and more new types of such a simple item as a diaper appear.

Diaper or diaper?

A small clarification on terminology. Modern parents increasingly use the word “diaper”, meaning not a specific manufacturer, but the hygiene item itself. This is not true. A hygiene item is a diaper. And “diaper” is the name of the brand of these very items. Firm Procter & Gamble for the first time began selling Pampers disposable diapers in Russia. Pamper translated from English means to pamper. It would be incorrect to call, for example, Libero brand diapers diapers. Even in English, although it would be more correct in American English language, there is a specific word for diaper - diaper. To paraphrase a well-known saying: not everything is diaper like Pampers.

Types of diapers

The classification of diapers is quite complex if you break it down by individual features. Moreover, one product can combine several properties, which simplifies the choice.

By number of uses

This characteristic is the most important when choosing a diaper.

Disposable diapers

As the name suggests, these are diapers that are used once. Most often, disposable diapers look like panties with elastic or Velcro. Most disposable diapers have the following structure:

  • Upper layer. Contacts the baby's body. Must allow moisture to pass through quickly.
  • Distribution layer. Helps liquid to be evenly distributed inside the diaper.
  • Absorbent or absorbent layer. Retains liquid and turns it into a gel to prevent backflow. The amount of liquid absorbed depends on this layer.
  • Outer layer. Prevents clothes from getting wet and liquid leaking out.

Disposable diapers may have special pockets on the back and elastic bands around the legs to prevent leaks.

Manufacturers often add flavorings whose effectiveness is questionable. Sometimes they can be harmful, because... They have a very strong and not very pleasant smell.

The outer layer can be decorated with various designs. There is no practical benefit from them, but they make the diapers visually more attractive.

Much more important for a diaper is the ability to pass air. In its absence, there is a high probability of diaper rash and dermatitis. As you know, a diaper covers 30% of a newborn’s body, so there must be ventilation. This is especially true during the hot season. Otherwise, in addition to dermatitis, the child may experience overheating.

Advantages of disposable diapers:
  • Easy to use. No maintenance required. Throw away after use.
  • They do not get wet, so they do not cause discomfort to the child.
  • Fixes well. It is very rare for a diaper to accidentally fly off or come undone, unless of course the baby helps him.
  • Suitable for long term use. Some manufacturers prescribe wearing time up to 12 hours. Although in practice this is nothing more than marketing ploy. Such a long period is permissible only for night sleep. During the day it is necessary to change at least 3-4 times.
  • Small volume. A dry diaper does not stand out much under clothes.
  • High-quality products are made from hypoallergenic materials and, when used correctly, do not cause dermatitis or diaper rash.
Flaws:
  • Poor air permeability and fragrances can cause diaper rash and skin irritation.
  • Price. An important disadvantage is the cost of using disposable diapers and their price. Especially in the first months of life, there is a very large daily consumption.
  • Causing harm environment. Disposable diapers contain polypropylene and absorbents that take several hundred years to break down.
  • Using disposable diapers can cause problems with potty training.
  • The accumulation of liquid inside the diaper makes it impossible to track the number of urinations.

Using disposable diapers significantly saves parents time and effort, but at the same time has a negative impact on the budget.

Reusable nappies

This type of diaper was used by our mothers and grandmothers. If we talk about the types of reusable diapers, we can highlight the following:

  • Gauze . The cheapest option. Gauze folded in several layers is folded into a rectangle or triangle and put on the child. There are no advantages other than price. They absorb poorly and adhere even worse to the child.
  • Fabric . Diaper or flannel fabric. Suitable for newborns. From about three months they cease to be effective due to poor fixation.
  • Knitted . They come in the form of shorts or panties, with ties or buttons.

Reusable diapers consist of two parts: fixing (panties) and absorbent (insert).

The structure of most modern models of reusable panties consists of two layers:

  • Interior . Protects against moisture and has good breathability. Typically made from microfiber, bamboo and similar materials.
  • External . Drains moisture to the liner. Made from synthetic hypoallergenic or natural fabric.

If you compare individually, a reusable diaper will cost more than a disposable one. But we need a lot. Reusable diaper inserts are much cheaper than disposable diapers. As a result, we get decent savings in the form of money. But not the energy and time. Reusable diapers require at least regular washing, and the fixing part also requires ironing. This makes their use not so economical. The consumption of water and powder for washing will bring the cost closer to disposable ones.

Advantages of reusable diapers:
  • They consist entirely of natural materials, so they have no contraindications.
  • They have good breathability compared to disposable ones.
  • Do not harm the environment.
  • They have a long service life.
  • They make it possible to track the number of times your child urinates.
Flaws:
  • Requires regular washing and ironing.
  • They absorb liquid worse than disposable ones and can leak especially at night.
  • It needs to be changed after every urination.
  • They have a large volume, so clothes need to be purchased a size larger.

The durability of reusable diapers is a definite plus, provided you're willing to put in the effort to care for them.

By weight

An important characteristic, since it serves as the main indicator when choosing the size of a diaper.

Most manufacturers adhere to the following size range, based on the child’s weight:

  • 0 — suitable for premature babies and low birth weight babies up to 3 kg.
  • 1 — for children weighing up to 5 kg.
  • 2 - for children weighing 3-7 kg.
  • 3 - for children weighing 4-9 kg.
  • 4 - for children weighing 8-14 kg
  • 5 - for children weighing 10-20 kg.
  • 6 - for children weighing 15-25 kg.

Some people also link age to body weight, but this is pointless, because... Children develop individually.

To use this ruler, you need to know the weight of the baby, and you need to take into account individual characteristics physique. If you see that a diaper that is the right weight is leaking and is pressing too tightly against the child’s body, then it is better to switch to a larger size. Also, some manufacturers offer intermediate sizes: 2+, 3+, etc.

By gender

According to this characteristic, all diapers are divided into three types:

  • unisex
  • for boys
  • for girls

The difference is due to the location of the absorbent in the absorbent layer. In unisex it is evenly distributed. For boys it is in the front part, for girls it is in the central part of the diaper.

The usefulness is questionable. Many babies like to sleep on their stomachs, which means, regardless of gender, liquid will accumulate in the front, while the back will remain completely dry.

Boys' diapers are a little looser in the front, and the Velcro is positioned a little higher. This is the only significant plus for parents of boys. However, as you know, diapers are not recommended for boys at all.

The external differences in the applied drawings are not particularly useful either.

Unisex suits both boys and girls both from a practical point of view and neutral designs.

According to the age

This characteristic is worth paying attention to. Diapers are classified according to age:

  • for newborns
  • universal
  • for active and older children

Diapers for newborns
differ in materials. As a rule, they are softer than universal ones. They have a special indicator strip that helps parents understand that their child has urinated. And also some models have a special notch in the front part, which is necessary so as not to accidentally damage the unhealed umbilical cord.

Universal They do not stand out in any way and can be used at any age at the request of parents.

Diapers for active and older children made in the form of panties. Manufacturers claim that when a child begins to actively crawl, run and jump, it is more effective to use panty diapers. They reinforce this opinion with an increased price. Panties, on average, will cost you 20% more than universal Velcro diapers. In practice, the cost does not justify itself. Velcro copes well with the fixation function. They will not fly off without additional help from the baby. And if the child has set out to remove the diaper, then rest assured that he will get rid of both universal and panties. It is worth highlighting swim diapers as a separate item. They are also disposable and reusable, but differ in their design. The main task of swim diapers is not to allow liquid to pass either out or in. For this it is important to choose the right size.

The use of swim diapers is mandatory in almost all pools. They will also come in handy in open waters. Firstly, they help prevent infections during bowel movements. Secondly, you will be sure that there will be no awkward situation if your child goes to the toilet in the water.

Advantages of swim diapers:

  • They are made of waterproof materials and, due to their tight fit in the area of the waist and legs, do not allow moisture to pass through or escape.
  • They are made in the form of panties, so they will not unfasten or fall off while swimming.
  • They have good breathability.
  • They do not increase in size or weight from water.
  • Does not contain fragrances.

Flaws:

  • The price is higher compared to regular ones. Pack up to 10 pcs.
  • It is not recommended to wear it for more than an hour.

Some mothers advise using a disposable diaper twice, but this is strongly discouraged from a hygienic point of view.

Otherwise, the thing is useful, especially for those who teach children to swim from infancy.

As you can see, there is considerable diversity. As always, mothers should be guided when choosing common sense, so as not to overpay for pseudo-useful characteristics.

The main things to pay attention to:

  1. Materials. Must be of high quality, breathable and hypoallergenic. The composition should not include latex and polyethylene, as well as synthetic fragrances.
  2. Size. A suitable size will ensure comfortable wearing, prevent leaks and dermatitis from a tight fit.
  3. Absorbency. This is what you buy them for. The diaper should quickly absorb liquid and not allow it to flow back out.

A well-known brand is not always the key to success. Possibly in search perfect diaper You will have to change more than one manufacturer. For these purposes, purchase small packages of no more than 10 pieces. If you are satisfied with the quality and efficiency, then you can move on to purchasing large packages. At the same time, you should pay attention to the expiration date to avoid unexpected allergies.

Health to you and your kids!
