Thanksgiving Day in the USA and Canada. Thanksgiving Day in Canada Canadian experience class, changes in the program

Thanksgiving- one of the most touching holidays in the USA and Canada, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving Day appeared 400 years ago and refers to public holidays, since it is inextricably linked with the history of these countries.

The history of Thanksgiving Day

This holiday was founded in 1620. The English religious community crossed the Atlantic Ocean and settled in Massachusetts (in the New World). They came to America because they wanted religious freedom. Their first winter was difficult and many died because the settlers arrived too late to produce a bountiful crop. But the next year the Indians taught them how to grow corn. The grain harvest was good. A three-day holiday was organized on this occasion. This was the first Thanksgiving celebration.

Thanksgiving Day became a national holiday after the corresponding decree of the country's first president, George Washington, in 1789.

Customs and Traditions of Thanksgiving Day

WITH Happy Thanksgiving There are a number of traditions that Americans sacredly preserve and observe. All family members must go to church. After the service, gather at the house of an older relative, even if they live far away. On this day, large dinners and family gatherings are held. Everyone expresses gratitude for all the good things they have.

Charities offer traditional meals to homeless people. Even at metro stations, special tables are installed on which everyone can place their donations, including food.

Of course, like any holiday there are traditional dishes. Thanksgiving is no exception to this either. Almost the same dishes are served at the festive table as back in 1621, during the first Thanksgiving Day. Some of the dishes have already become real symbols Thanksgiving Day- stuffed turkey, pumpkin pie, cranberry jam, sweet potatoes. The table is also richly decorated with the gifts of nature - apples, oranges, small pumpkins, nuts, bunches of grapes, and ears of corn are laid out on decorative trays, symbolizing a rich harvest. Autumn bouquets of golden yellow, red and orange chrysanthemums placed throughout the house give a festive feeling.

V D thanksgiving day There are always parades (most of them costumed in 17th century clothes and Indian costumes) and fun. In New York City, the parade features balloons in the shape of popular cartoon characters, and famous television stars and bands from all over the United States take part in this celebration.

Every year more than 55 million people watch this parade on TV. Many major US cities also organize parades on Thanksgiving Day. Watching college football matches on television is a typical pastime on this day.

Materials from The Waves of English website, thematically related to Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is one of the most significant holidays in the United States (the largest English-speaking country in the world). And, naturally, a number of materials dedicated to this holiday have been published on our educational portal.

Each country has its own holidays, which often become international, and among such holidays we can highlight Thanksgiving Day, which in the USA, Canada and Great Britain is celebrated today at the state level, being a general civil holiday. On this day, it is customary for the whole family to gather, talk about their successes and thank God and all family members for this. In recent years, purely American holidays such as Thanksgiving have been added to the number of Orthodox and state holidays in Russia, while many do not even understand where this holiday came from and what, by and large, it means. Thanksgiving Day in America, Canada and England is celebrated differently, and the dates are different, but they are united by the belief in family ties and gratitude to God for everything that you have managed to achieve.

When is Thanksgiving celebrated in different countries?

Before you understand what Thanksgiving Day is and why it is celebrated on such a grand scale, you need to plunge into history. Everyone knows that in the 16th and 17th centuries, sailors from Europe actively conquered undeveloped lands, and Thanksgiving Day in America, the date of which is constantly changing, goes back to the distant year 1620. It was then that members of the shipwrecked expedition landed on the soil of modern America. Most of the expedition members drowned, others faced cold or starvation, but some sailors still managed to survive. And the Indians helped them in this, teaching them how to survive in difficult conditions; they began to hunt and grow edible plants. By the way, the first harvest showed good results, and this became the reason for celebrating Thanksgiving Day, in which the indigenous people also took part, bringing their treats.

Thanksgiving Day 2016, the date of celebration of which falls on every fourth Thursday of November, was thus first celebrated in America in 1621, and therefore this tradition has survived to this day and Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in this month, and this tradition in America has grown into holiday of national significance. This was legislated only in the mid-20th century. Today, just like in America, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in England, perhaps because it was the English sailors who were, for the most part, among the first settlers. It should be noted that the UK learned about the existence of Thanksgiving relatively recently, but the popularity of the holiday here today is enormous.

So, on October 19, 2015, Canada elected a new government led by a prime minister. The Liberal Party became the ruling party and its leader, Justin Trudeau, took the place of Prime Minister of Canada. At this point, the time of the Conservatives for 9 long years ended, and Stephen Harper withdrew his powers as head of state. With the change of government cabinet, the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration of Canada also changed. It was John McCallum. What do these changes mean for international students and potential immigrants? According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada itself, positive changes are coming to increase the total number of new permanent residents in Canada, including through family reunification programs, changes to the Express Entry system and the restoration of the maximum age for sponsored children to 22 years. In addition, possible changes in relation to international students in Canada were also discussed. The new Prime Minister reportedly promised that immigration to Canada for students will become somewhat easier and more realistic, in particular, he plans to eliminate the barriers that prevent foreign students from enrolling in the Canadian Experience Class immigration program. All we have to do is follow the news closely and hope for good news!

It's possible to get a work visa to Canada again in 2015

05/08/201505/08/2015

People wishing to obtain a Work Visa to Canada are gaining hope again. With the introduction of the new Express Entry immigration system, work visas to Canada were effectively stopped in 2015. Usually such pauses occur when certain changes need to be made. The same thing happened with work visas. And on April 30, 2015, these innovations were finally presented and put into effect. First of all, the following criteria were updated: average hourly wages by specialty and by region, which sorted all vacant positions into “high-wage” and “low-wage.” As before, to obtain a work permit for a foreign worker, an employer must first submit documents to ESDC, Economic and Social Development Canada. Based on their performance, a Canadian company may receive a positive LMIA (formerly LMO), a labor market assessment that essentially means that the position cannot be filled by local workers and entitles it to invite a worker from abroad. Under the new rules, ESDC compares the proposed salary for a vacancy with the average salary in the province and, based on this, classifies the employer's request into one of the categories: “high-wage” and “low-wage”. If the salary level is below the provincial average, then the requirements are the same, if higher, then different.

High Salary Stream

For this category, the employer must provide a company action plan to reduce the business's dependence on foreign workers (Transition plan). The use of foreign labor should be a temporary phenomenon.

Low wage stream

This category does not require the preparation of such a plan (Transition plan), but there are other requirements. A Canadian employer may not exceed the limit on the number of low-wage foreign workers. In addition, obtaining LMIA for some work positions in areas such as Accommodation, Food, Retail will be severely limited. Employers who offer wages below the provincial average wage are required to: pay for the employee’s transportation services (to Canada and back), guarantee the availability of affordable housing for the employee, pay for temporary health insurance for the employee until he becomes eligible for provincial health insurance, provide a work contract. For all low-wage positions, the duration of the work permit will be limited to 1 year. Beginning April 30, 2015, the latest regional unemployment data will be taken into account when issuing work visas to Canada. These indicators will determine in which regions employers can obtain the right to invite a foreign worker to a low-wage/low-skilled position in the areas of Accommodation, Food and Retail. LMIA applications will not be considered for these industries in regions with unemployment rates of 6 percent or higher.

Expedited process for reviewing documents for a work visa to Canada

Some high-demand, high-paying occupations in Canada, as well as short-term vacancies, may be eligible for expedited review services in as little as 10 business days. Applying for an LMIA requires a very serious approach on the part of the employer and includes the collection of a number of supporting documents and statistical information, for example, data on the number of local candidates for the position, the number of unqualified candidates for the position, and more.

Canadian citizenship is becoming more expensive...

01/06/201501/06/2015

On January 1, 2015, the Canadian federal government dramatically increased fees for processing applications for Canadian citizenship.

This is the second significant fee increase in less than a year. In February 2014, the fee was raised from 100 Canadian dollars to 300. Now, from January 1, 2015, the cost of services for processing an application for citizenship is 530 Canadian dollars.

In addition to the $530, there is still a so-called Right of Citizenship fee of $100 CAD.

Immigration and Citizenship Canada says the new rates will cover the cost of processing each application, which amounts to approximately C$555. Thus, increasing prices will remove additional burden from taxpayers.

The new fees can be found on the official website CIC.

Below we provide comparative information on the cost of similar services in other countries. As you can see, the most affordable fees in Australia are $264 in Canadian currency. In the UK, by contrast, citizenship is truly a luxury, costing you £959 or CAD 1,740. That's it! There is something to appreciate.

The most popular cities in Canada for immigration 2014

10/04/201410/04/2014

As of 2014, Canada has compiled a list of cities that attract the largest number of immigrants in the skilled immigrants category. The top six included the following Canadian cities:

Calgary, Alberta

Vancouver, British Columbia

Ottawa, Ontario

Waterloo, Ontario

Richmond Hill, Ontario

St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

The main criteria for this study were such indicators as: the health care system, the state of the economy, the state of the environment, the level of the education system, innovation, the situation with residential real estate and the social structure.

Calgary's top spot is due primarily to the current state of its economy and a significant shift in innovation. But it should be noted that it is this significant growth that is the reason for the somewhat weakened state of affairs in such areas as education and healthcare. The city simply cannot keep up with the pace of development and population growth.

Vancouver, as always, is famous for the state of the environment and the integrity of its people. The city's beauty and temperate climate attract many new immigrants.

Ottawa also stood out for its social structure. In addition, such areas as education, innovation and economics were at their best.

Waterloo itself is the birthplace of many start-ups, so it is not surprising that the city's technology innovation rates are very high, as are its education and economics.

The Toronto suburb of Richmond Hill excels in education, innovation and community. This city produces the largest number of engineering, math and science graduates per capita each year.

A surprise on this list was the city of St. John's, which showed incredible results in one of the criteria, the health care system. The strong economic performance was supported by the region's impressive oil wealth.

Canadian Population 2014 and Projections to 2038

09/25/201409/25/2014

According to a Statistics Canada report released in September 2014, Canada's population will continue to grow over the next 50 years, reaching between 39.35 million and 43.47 million by 2038, and between 40 million and 63.5 million by 2063. It is not possible to obtain more accurate data, since there are too many different scenarios for the development of the situation, which is affected by factors such as the birth rate, mortality rate and the rate of immigration. Under the medium growth scenario, Canada's population will grow from 35.2 million people (as of 2013) to 51 million people by 2063.

Province of British Columbia

The population of the province of British Columbia could grow to 6 million 662 thousand people by 2038. Currently, the province's population is 4 million 582 thousand people, of which about 2.5 million live in Greater Vancouver (Metro Vancouver) and 800 thousand on Vancouver Island. The province crossed the 4 million mark in 1999-2000.

Province of Ontario

Under all scenarios, Ontario's population will continue to grow steadily over the next 25 years. And from 13.6 million in 2014, the population will reach between 14.8 and 18.3 million people by 2038, which will allow this territory of Canada to remain the most populous province in Canada.

Province of Alberta

By all indicators and under all development options, Alberta's population growth will be the fastest in Canada. According to calculations, the population will reach 5.6 - 6.8 million people by 2038. This is compared to 4 million in 2013. This growth will allow Alberta to surpass British Columbia in terms of population.

Immigration program to Canada for 2015

04/18/201404/18/2014

Express Entry or the “fast track” immigration program will be launched in January 2015. Initially the program was called “Expression of Interest”.

This immigration program to Canada promises to be something completely innovative in the field of immigration and is aimed at improving the country's economy and providing it with the necessary labor resources.

The Immigration Express program is particularly flexible and will help fill vacant jobs that could not be filled with local workers. This will attract the necessary labor force to the regions. Under the terms of this program, applicants who have received job offers, as well as immigrants who participate in the Provincial Nominee Program, will be offered permanent resident status. This is the main advantage of the new program compared to the Temporary Worker program, which was focused only on temporary employment of foreign workers.

The “Express Immigration” program is intended for qualified specialists who will be able to submit a questionnaire with information about work experience and education to the general system (pool). If a candidate meets the program's minimum requirements, their file will be ranked relative to other applications received from candidates. The Government of Canada, in turn, will review them and invite the most qualified specialists to apply for permanent resident status in Canada. In addition, the application data will be searchable by Canadian companies and those who receive a valid job offer or are nominated for immigration by the province will also be able to automatically apply for immigration.

This method seems to be more effective for the Canadian government, since it allows those who have a high chance of success in Canada to immigrate, and not those who are first in line with immigration documents, as was the case in the past.

At the same time, qualified personnel will be able to count on shorter processing times for documents - 6 months or less.

This program will serve as an excellent resource for employers to find valuable employees.

High school in Canada

04/09/201404/09/2014

A ranking of secondary schools in British Columbia was compiled based on student academic performance for the 2012-2013 school year. When compiling this rating, 293 educational institutions (both public and private secondary schools in the province) were considered and assessments of annual provincial examinations were taken into account in seven indicators:

average exam score,

percentage of students who did not pass the exam

difference between average academic score and exam score,

difference in English language results between female and male schoolchildren,

difference in mathematics results between female and male schoolchildren,

percentage of graduates,

percentage of repeaters.

Private schools again dominate and top the list. Canada's York House High School and Crofton House School tied for first place on the list for the second year in a row. Both educational institutions are located in the city of Vancouver.

The highest place that a public school in Canada managed to take in the province of British Columbia is the 21st position in the ranking and the Lord Byng school, also located in the largest city in the province (Vancouver).

Below we present part of this rating for your information. The full list can be found on this website. secondary school rankings .

Immigration to Quebec - limits for 2014

04/08/201404/08/2014

Limits on Quebec immigration programs for 2014 have been announced. These quantitative restrictions affected the categories of qualified workers, investors and entrepreneurs.

Québec Skilled Worker Program - 6,500 applications will be accepted between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015. This is a very significant reduction in the number of applications accepted compared to the previous limit of 20,000.

Quebec Investor Program - 1,750 applications will be accepted between September 8 and 19, 2014 (two weeks total). However, no more than 1,200 applicants from any one country.

Quebec Entrepreneur Program - only 500 applications will be reviewed by the Government of Quebec.

Of course, with such restrictions on the number of documents accepted, immigration to Quebec, although still very attractive, requires a very careful approach to the preparation of a package of documents and does not allow any miscalculations or errors in registration.

Toronto Attractions - Summer All Year Round for $60 Million

03/25/201403/25/2014

A new theme park is set to open its doors in Toronto in 2016. Toronto's landmarks are world famous, including Niagara Falls and the CN Tower (one of the tallest buildings in the world), but the new park is projected to be one of the city's biggest tourist attractions in three decades.

about the project

A final decision on the location of the park has not yet been made. Three options are currently being considered. As planned, this project will be an island of summer for residents and guests of the city for all 365 days a year, which is especially important with the frosty winters typical of the province. On an area of 9,300 square meters there will be sandy beaches, wave pools, restaurants, cafes and other recreational facilities. The park will be equipped with a huge retractable roof, which will transform it into an outdoor and indoor complex depending on the season of the year, thereby ensuring smooth operation all year round. The cost of the future project is estimated at $60 million. According to experts, the summer island will create about 230 new jobs for local residents and will attract more than 500,000 tourists in the first year.

Jobs in Alberta

03/20/201403/20/2014

The province of Alberta has demonstrated incredible performance in the number of new jobs over the past year. According to recent statistical studies, over the past 12 months, the number of new job positions in the province amounted to 82,000. Compare this to the national total of 95,000. That is, Alberta accounts for about 87% of all new jobs in Canada.

General trends in the province

The work in Alberta is really gaining momentum in parallel with the overall growth and development of the province itself. Of course, this is largely due to the development of Canada’s natural resources, which the province of Alberta is rich in. Engineering, mining and construction professionals are in high demand. Vacant positions are filled by both Canadians, migrants from neighboring provinces, and foreign temporary workers. By the way, last year alone, about 81,000 foreign workers received permanent resident status in Alberta.

Data:

The total population of Alberta as of February 2014 was approximately 3,236,300 people

Total working population as of February 2014 - 2,364,200

Unemployment rate for February 2014 - 4.3%

Port of Vancouver: 2013 figures

03/04/201403/04/2014

The Port of Vancouver, Canada's largest port, announced its 2013 performance results to the public. According to the report, the port will continue its growth trend in 2013, including a repeat of record container traffic volumes.

Indicators for 2013

Thus, over the past year, the Port of Vancouver handled a record amount of cargo - 135 million tons, which is 9% more than in the previous 2012.

Bulk cargo shipments grew by 11% in 2013, driven primarily by coal and grain shipments.

Cruise traffic jumped 22%, which certainly provided further stimulation to the tourism sector. Thus, the port welcomed 812,398 passengers in 2013.

The Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest gateway, handling up to 19 percent of the country's total trade. The port's activities provide jobs to about 57 thousand people in the Lower Mainland (southwestern mainland part of the province of British Columbia) and about 100 thousand people across Canada.

In addition, the Port of Vancouver carried out active activities in 2013 in the field of reducing the negative impact on the environment.

Canada's alcohol laws exceed expectations

02/26/201402/26/2014

British Columbia's tougher drinking and driving laws have produced more than satisfactory results.

Let us remind you that the changes were made in September 2010 in memory of 4-year-old Alexandra, who died in 2008 under the wheels of a drunk driver’s car. Then the court, having taken into account all the circumstances of the incident, sentenced the guilty party to 2.5 years in prison.

Changes effective September 2010

According to the innovations adopted in 2010, drivers face the following penalties for blood alcohol levels:

First warning: BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) exceeds 0.05 mg per 100 ml

Immediate confiscation of driver's license for 3 days Possible confiscation of the vehicle to a fine yard for 3 days Fine of CAD 200

Second warning (5 years): BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) exceeds 0.05 mg per 100 ml

Immediate confiscation of driver's license for 7 days Possible confiscation of the vehicle to a fine yard for 7 days Fine of CAD 300

Third warning (for 5 years): BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) exceeds 0.05 mg per 100 ml

Immediate confiscation of driver's license for 30 days Possible impoundment of vehicle for 30 days Fine of CAD 400

Failure of a blood alcohol test: BAC greater than 0.08 mg per 100 ml Or refusal to take a sample

Immediate confiscation of driver's license for 90 days Possible impoundment of vehicle for 30 days Fine of CAD 500

Possible referral for treatment

Results for 3 years

It cannot be said that Canada's anti-alcohol laws are particularly stringent, but they certainly produce results. Thus, the number of deaths due to alcohol intoxication decreased by a significant 52% in just 3 years after the adoption of this law, in figures this is from 112 deaths per year to 54.

During the entire existence of this law (from September 2010 to December 2013), more than 22,000 drivers received warnings and more than 39,000 received the highest degree of punishment.

In Ontario, immigration should work for the benefit of the province.

The Ontario government is committed to action to attract more immigrants and prevent immigration fraud.

Proposed Changes

The province continues to face a shortage of qualified specialists in certain sectors and industries. And so in Ontario, immigration and provincial programs must reflect the state of the labor market. The province's proposed bill would give it greater control when selecting immigration candidates.

The government wants to increase the number of economic immigrants allowed under the provincial nominee program from the current limit of 1,300 to 5,000.

In addition, it is proposed to increase penalties for immigrants for providing false information during the examination of an immigration application.

Buying real estate in Canada is no longer so easy

02/08/201402/08/2014

Vancouver is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful cities not only in Canada, but also in the world. Of course, such a status also entails some negative aspects.

This, of course, affects its popularity in terms of purchasing real estate, especially by foreign investors, which sometimes entails an unreasonable rise in prices. It is primarily the local residents who suffer from this.

Real estate in Canada Prices:

According to research by the Canadian Real Estate Association, the average home price in Halifax is C$273,792, in Toronto is C$541,637, and in Vancouver is C$825,635.

Over the past 17 years, the price of residential space in Vancouver has increased by an average of 5.5% annually. And if this trend continues, it will be very difficult for an ordinary worker to buy real estate in Canada.

Already today, Vancouver residents are thinking about the question of whether to buy or rent. And many are inclined to the second option. At least it does not involve paying maintenance costs/fees, property taxes and other incidental expenses.

Immigration to Canada of parents closed until 2015

02/04/201402/04/2014

It took only a month to reach the maximum number of parent sponsorship applications for 2014. Five thousand new packages of documents have been accepted and the program for immigration of parents to Canada is closed until next year.

By the end of this year, Canada plans to accept about 20 thousand new residents under the parent and grandparent sponsorship program.

Immigration to Canada for parents is a very popular immigration program in the family category. And the task of the immigration service is to minimize the waiting period for obtaining an immigrant visa for this class.

If you didn't make it to the first 5,000 applicants for this program, don't despair. The Super Visa program for parents is still in effect, which can brighten up the wait until the next new launch of the sponsorship program. To date, approximately 28,000 Super Visas have been issued. Almost 98% of applicants received positive results.

Super Visa - multiple entry visa for parents and grandparents. Issued for a period of 10 years and allows you to stay in Canada for up to 2 years without the need to update your status, that is, to leave Canada.

Multiple visa to Canada

Significant changes come into force on February 6, 2014. All applications for a visa to Canada will automatically be considered for a Multivisa, that is, a multiple-entry visa. The concept of a one-time visa will no longer exist.

A multiple visa to Canada allows tourists to visit the country for 10 years without having to reapply for a visa. But the maximum duration of each stay should not exceed 6 months. Of course, this condition does not apply to foreign students and temporary workers. The duration of each stay is determined by the validity period of the Study Permit and Work Permit.

New amounts of Consular fees

Along with this innovation, the amounts of Consular fees have also been revised:

Single-entry temporary resident visa - canceled (cost CAD 75)

Temporary Resident Multivisa / Tourist Multivisa - cost reduced from 150 to 100 CAD)

Maximum family visa fees - cost increased from CAD 400 to CAD 500

Study Permit - cost increased from 125 to 150 Canadian dollars

Work Permit - cost increased from 150 to 155 CAD

Maximum fees for a Work Permit for artistic groups of 3 or more people - the cost has increased from 450 to 465 CAD

Canadian passport - longer, but faster

01/28/201401/28/2014

This news concerns not only those wishing to immigrate to Canada, but also residents with PR status.

In 2014, the Canadian Parliament intends to review the procedure for obtaining the status of a Canadian citizen.

There have been no changes to the conditions and procedure for applying for a Canadian passport for more than 25 years. According to forecasts, the changes will affect the following points.

Wait longer - get faster

Presumably, an immigrant will now have to live in Canada as a permanent resident longer before he can apply for a Canadian passport. This possible change is justified by the fact that immigrants should get to know the country better and more deeply before obtaining local citizenship. Today, the period of residence (actual presence in Canada) must be 3 years out of the last four - only after this a permanent resident of Canada, subject to all other conditions, can submit documents to obtain citizenship status.

But the procedure for considering the application itself, according to forecasts, should be reduced. Applicants will be able to obtain a Canadian passport in a shorter time frame. Currently, the average waiting period for documents applied for Canadian citizenship is from 2 to 3 years.

Circumstances for deprivation of citizenship

It is also expected that changes will be made to give the government the power to revoke citizenship in exceptional circumstances, such as treason or complicity in acts of terrorism.

Passport as a gift for coming of age

The issue of obtaining citizenship for babies born in Canada is also a pressing issue. Tourism of pregnant women to Canada is quite common, especially from Asian countries. A child born in Canada is entitled to a Canadian passport upon reaching adulthood.

This problem is also expected to be considered and solutions found, but a little later. Provincial governments are also involved (maternity hospitals are subject to provincial regulation), so discussions should involve them.

Great time to visit relatives and friends or go for tourism purposes!

Education in Canada for foreigners - new government plans

01/20/201401/20/2014

The Canadian government has announced its ambitious plans for international education. The goal is to double the number of international students and researchers coming to Canada for education, and to increase this figure to 450 thousand by 2022!

Where are students expected from?

It is expected that the bulk of new students will come from such areas as:

Brazil, China, India, Mexico, North Africa and Middle East, Vietnam.

And this is in addition to the already existing stable flows from

France, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Korea and the USA.

Time will tell whether the government will be able to implement such an ambitious plan, but the indicators over the past years add to the enthusiasm. Thus, in 2012, the number of foreign students in Canada already amounted to 265,000 people, which is 11% more than the previous year.

Of course, there is a huge difference between 265 thousand in 2012 and 450 thousand by 2022. But this only emphasizes the seriousness of the Canadian government’s intentions to bring the country on a par with the leaders in the educational sector in terms of the number of international students - the United States and Australia.

For comparison:

In 2012 - 2013, 819,644 international students attended American colleges and universities.

In 2012 - 2013, 515,853 international students were educated in Australia.

According to current estimates, Canada accounts for only 5% of the world's international student flow and is the 7th most popular destination in the world after the US, UK, China, France, Germany and Australia.

Education in Canada for foreigners is prestigious, because Canada is a truly unique country, a multinational, friendly and safe country. And Canadian education meets the highest world standards. It is one thing to convey this idea and present it on the international education market. But according to many experts, in order to achieve its goals of attracting international students, the government will also have to concentrate on resolving other issues, including visa and immigration:

facilitating the process of obtaining a Study Permit;

providing full-time foreign students with the opportunity to work part-time in Canada without the need to apply for a Work Permit.

Forecast 2013 – 2020: In-demand specialties in Canada

01/16/201401/16/2014

According to experts from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development of Canada, the demand for some specialties in Canada will remain consistently high for at least the next 7 years.

The most in-demand specialties in Canada

1) Nurses, especially registered nurses. This issue is still quite hot in Canada. Specialists in this field are required not only in hospitals and clinics, but also in nursing homes.

The predicted number of new jobs is about 128 thousand.

2) Technological and technical employees of the medical field, in particular medical laboratory workers, highly specialized specialists in diagnosing diseases (sonography, ultrasound, x-rays, cardiology and others).

The predicted number of new jobs is about 40 thousand.

3) Managers in the educational, health and social spheres.

The predicted number of new jobs is about 67 thousand.

4) Specialists in architecture and urban planning.

The predicted number of new jobs is about 13 thousand.

5) Workers in the construction sector, including supervisors for construction projects and construction workers of various types.

The predicted number of new jobs is about 97 thousand.

Rising real estate prices in Canada

01/08/201401/08/2014

With the growing popularity of Canada, the rapid increase in the number of new residents of the country of the maple leaf and the stable situation in the economy, prices for Canadian real estate continue to rise.

Cost: Year Indicators and Forecasts

Thus, at the end of 2012, the average cost of a residential building was 380 thousand Canadian dollars. This figure was derived from research in 25 major cities in Canada. If we take Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, the amount will at least double. The price of 380,000 Canadian dollars is a record for Canada in the history of residential real estate. But is this the limit?

According to forecasts, by the end of this year the average cost will increase by another 2 and a half percent, by approximately 10,000 Canadian dollars. It is expected that the leaders in price growth will be Alberta, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Saskatchewan.

What about demand?

The rise in real estate prices in Canada, of course, does not please local residents, but even with such trends, the demand for real estate in Canada does not decrease. In the new year 2014, about 475 thousand transactions with residential real estate are expected.

Fair for immigrants: success in Vancouver too

01/03/201401/03/2014

For the first time in Vancouver, on December 16, 2013, the annual fair for immigrants was held, dedicated to Education, Career and Adaptation of new permanent residents of Canada (Career, Education, Settlement Fair). And the first pancake did not turn out to be lumpy at all, on the contrary - the event went off with a bang!

The previous three fairs were successfully held in Toronto. In the same year, it was decided to hold this event on the territory of the central public library of the city of Vancouver.

Details of the event in Vancouver

The fair went on all day and it seemed that the flow of people wishing to attend this event was inexhaustible.

The doors opened at 11 am and a wide variety of information sources were available to new residents of Canada: stands, seminars, consultations. The main goal of the event is to help immigrants navigate the new labor and education market. To help them at the fair there were specialists in various fields, including job search, diploma assessment, advanced training and others. There were free workshops and information sessions throughout the day on resume writing and job interview preparation.

At 7 pm the fair ended and its results were highly appreciated - a lot of positive feedback and thanks were received from participants and visitors.

Canadian experience class, changes in the program

12/17/201312/17/2013

There have once again been some changes to the immigration rules of one of the most popular Canadian Experience Class (CEC) programs, the Canadian Experience.

What is a Canadian Experience Class (CEC)?

This program is primarily suitable for temporary residents of Canada who came to the country on a work visa, as well as foreign students who studied in Canada and received a subsequent Post-Graduate Work Permit. Basic requirements for the program: 12 months of work experience in Canada (skilled work experience, full-time, legal) and an appropriate level of English language proficiency.

Changes to the Canadian Experience Class Program

First of all, a limit was set on the number of applications for this program for the coming year, more precisely from November 9, 2013 to October 31, 2014 - 12,000 applications. And all applications accepted on November 9, 2013 and after are subject to the new rules.

1) The following specialties are no longer eligible for the CEC program:

Cooks

Food Service Supervisors

Administrative Officers

Administrative Assistants

Accounting Technicians and Bookkeepers

Retail Sales Supervisors

Only those documents for these specialties that were submitted for consideration before November 9 will be considered.

2) Moreover, according to the new rules, only the first 200 applications for each specialty category “B” NOC index (National Occupation Classification) will be accepted for consideration.

Yes, this puts a certain amount of pressure and extra stress on those wishing to immigrate under this program. Be careful when filling out documents, because incorrectly prepared documents can lead to their return, and subsequent applications will fill the existing limit for the specialty.

12/12/201312/12/2013

The Minister of Housing has pleased Alberta landlords and dashed the hopes of tenants once again - renting housing in Alberta will not become cheaper.

Origins of the problem

The fact is that due to the impressive influx of immigrants to the province of Alberta, the cost of rental housing in Alberta has risen significantly in price. An additional incentive for rising prices is the relatively high level of wages in the oil and gas province. According to a recent statistical study, the average weekly wage in August was $1,117.58 Canadian dollars per week, which is about $8 Canadian dollars per hour more than, for example, in the same province of Prince Edward.

These factors have contributed to rising prices in rental housing in Alberta. In one year, from April 2012 to April 2013, the market rose by an average of 7.2%.

So will housing be cheaper in Alberta?

Frustrated tenants voiced their indignation at rising rental prices, but the answer was clear - the government would not interfere with the free market with its price controls. Thus, housing in Alberta, or rather its availability, is in the hands of property owners.

The Minister explained his decision to stay out of the restrictions on rising rental cost trends in Alberta by saying that landlords also have to manage their own risks. After all, when the market collapses, as it did in 2008 (for example, rental prices fell from 1,900 to 1,100 Canadian dollars), the property owner/investor is also not protected by the government.

Parent Sponsorship 2014

Family immigration

The Canada Parent Sponsorship program is being reintroduced in 2014. Documents will be accepted from January 2 of the coming year. Although the document acceptance limit is currently 5,000 completed applications, it is expected that a total of approximately 20,000 visas will be issued in this direction (parents and grandparents).

The fact is that since 2011, the Canadian Immigration Service has accumulated a lot of unexamined applications, which they promise to deal with first.

And according to forecasts, by 2014 the time frame for reviewing documents for parental sponsorship will be about 2 - 2.5 years, by 2015 - only 1 - 2 years.

Modern Vancouver real estate

11/20/201311/20/2013

It's time to come to Vancouver to study and watch the growth of this monster, which will become the second tallest skyscraper in Vancouver - the Donald Trump Hotel and Tower.

About Donald Trump's new project in Vancouver

Here's what they say about the project: "Everything we do in this building is going to be a first time for the city." The city's first champagne bar in the lobby, the first nightclub - swimming pool, Rolls Royce taxi services for guests, etc., and add to this marble walls and floors in the bathrooms, an unsurpassed view from any window - in general, everything is at the limit of chic. Construction is already underway and should be completed by 2016. Thanksgiving - a holiday of gratitude for all the best things experienced in the expiring year - is a national holiday in Canada and the United States.

Its essence and meaning are common to all North Americans, although the dates of the celebration are noticeably separated in time: in Canada it is the second Monday in October, and in the USA it is the fourth Thursday in November.

The history of Thanksgiving in Canada dates back to the English pirate explorer Martin Frobisher, who, while trying to find a northern sea passage to India and China, found himself trapped in ice off the coast of North America. The harsh conditions destroyed the ships and part of the crew. The rest, in order to survive, had to land on the coast of today's Labrador, where In 1578, Frobisher held a formal ceremony of thanksgiving for the successful survival of the long and dangerous voyage. It is considered the first Canadian Thanksgiving, and the first Thanksgiving to take place in North America in general.

At the same time, French settlers, having crossed the ocean and arrived in what is now Canada with the explorer Samuel de Champlain, also offered prayers of thanksgiving to the Almighty and organized lavish thanksgiving feasts. They even established a “Custom of Good Cheer,” sharing their meals with pleasure and gratitude with their Aboriginal neighbors who helped them survive the inhumanly harsh North American winters.

Other colonists exploring the North American continent continued to perform similar ceremonies. Apparently, the multi-day feast in honor of the bountiful harvest that saved the lives of the first settlers of Plymouth Colony in the fall of 1621, from which current residents of the United States count their Thanksgiving Days, was just another event within the framework of a long-existing tradition...

Over the years of its existence, the holiday has acquired customs and changed its place in the calendar several times. One thing remained unchanged: on this day it was supposed to thank the Almighty (or, if you like, fate) for the favors shown. Which ones exactly? This was determined separately, depending on current events and the location of the holiday.

In Lower Canada, Thanksgiving Day was first celebrated on January 10, 1799, "as a sign of victory over our enemies, and in honor of the inestimable and manifold favors which our kingdom and its provinces have received and continue to receive." Over the years, Canadians had to express gratitude for the end of the war between Great Britain and France, for the end of the cholera epidemic, for the end of bloodshed in Europe (meaning the Napoleonic wars). And on June 4, 1856, the people of Canada said a special “thank you” for restoring peace between Great Britain and Russia.

Canada's first Thanksgiving Day since Confederation was celebrated on April 15, 1872, to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) from a serious illness. For a long time after this, Canadian Thanksgiving Day did not have not only a fixed date in the calendar, but also a specific focus for the universal gratitude of Canadians: in different years and at different times, Canadians expressed gratitude either for a bountiful harvest, or for what was prescribed by a special annual decree, until, finally, in 1931 a streamlined formulation was developed: "general gratitude to the almighty Lord for the favors with which he rewards the inhabitants of Canada." The date of the holiday is firmly fixed on the second Monday of October. So strong that when Thanksgiving was moved to Thursday in 1935 because of the elections scheduled for Monday, people were extremely outraged.

The most recent proclamation issued in 1957 was that Thanksgiving Day in Canada should be celebrated on the second Monday in October.

Despite the differences in the dates for celebrating Thanksgiving Day in Canada and the United States, the traditions of the holiday itself are the same: it is usually one of the weekends when relatives gather together around a large table. Traditional dishes on this day - roasted stuffed turkey with cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie beautifully topped with whipped cream, along with other delicious things on the table, much of it homemade. On this day, festive services are held in churches. Shop windows, courtyards, and house facades are decorated with stuffed animals, straw birds, pumpkins, and leaves specially released for this day. And for many people, this is simply a happy occasion to get together with loved ones, to thank fate for peace and prosperity in the family, for family happiness in the past year. In addition, this is a “long weekend” - a long weekend that everyone loves and spends with pleasure, without thinking too much about the origins of this holiday itself.

In addition, Thanksgiving Day is intended for all kinds of good deeds and charity - it is not for nothing that a massive fundraiser “for the benefit of the poor” takes place in Canada at the beginning of autumn. And finally, this day still retains the elements of a “harvest festival” - numerous autumn fairs are dedicated to it.

In the United States, where Thanksgiving is celebrated in November, it is considered one of the most important holidays, comparable in importance only to Christmas. In Canada it is given somewhat less importance. But the meaning of the holiday south and north of the forty-ninth parallel, separating the two countries, remains the same: on this day the whole family must gather at a common festive table (with the obligatory turkey with cranberry sauce) and amicably indulge in memories of the affairs of bygone days. “Today everyone offers sincere and humble praise to God - everyone except the turkeys,” Mark Twain wrote about this holiday.
