Every person is born, grows, ages, dies, and, living life, leaves behind a mark. And if a person, having lived his life, has not made any discoveries, then he still deserves to be remembered by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. All people on earth should know about their relatives who lived in the recent past. We owe our lives to our ancestors. We must know and preserve our history. Therefore this work relevant not only for the whole society, but also for a specific person, including me.

The object of my work is the genus of our family.

Purpose of the study: create a pedigree for our family.

The set goal defines the following tasks:

Find out what the word genealogy means.

    Compose family tree.

Outline the history of our family and my ancestors and find out the origin of my last name.

Draw your family's coat of arms.

The following were used in the study: research methods:

Analysis of sources on this topic.

Interview your parents and close relatives.

    Generalization of the research results.

Main part

Chapter I. What is pedigree?

In order to begin to study and compile your pedigree, you need to define the basic concept of this word.

There is even a special science of genealogy, which studies the history of clans, the origin of individuals, establishing family ties and compiling a family tree. The science of genealogy or genealogy (translated from Greek) means family and knowledge. It is also closely related to heraldry, which in turn deals with the study of coats of arms, which from Latin means heraldry. This science solved the problem of determining the status of a person in the Middle Ages. And later, under Peter, official state bodies appeared that were involved in the compilation and interpretation of coats of arms. The coat of arms is a symbolic image that serves as a permanent distinctive feature of a state, region, locality, clan or individual. In our time, this science of coats of arms is needed for knowledge of history. I was very interested in the family coat of arms, which, together with the pedigree and family tree, is an integral part of the concept of “ancestry”.

To find out the roots of my family, I interviewed my parents and grandparents and compiled a family tree.

Chapter II. My ancestry

2.1 My family history

As you know, without the past there is no future. And I’ll start the story of my family with myself.

I am Olga Yurievna Podgorodetskaya.

My surname Podgorodetskaya, according to one version, comes from a similar nickname, which probably comes from the common noun “city” - a small settlement. Apparently my ancestors, the owners of this surname, lived “under the city” or not far from the city. Thus, my surname was formed.

My name Olga is of Old Scandinavian origin and sounds like Helga, which means bright, wise, holy. I am 11 years old and I study in the 5th grade of school No. 57 in the city of Orenburg and I really like my school, as well as the teachers who teach me. I try to study diligently and not play pranks. With great pleasure I attend the “Young Artist” and “Applied Creativity” clubs. I go to the ski training section and practice English language. And in my free time from lessons and clubs, I like to read books with exciting adventures or science fiction, ice skating in winter and roller skating in summer in our park named after 50 years of the USSR.

Now I'm interested in creating diamond mosaic techniques. For my hobbies and desires to learn something new, I am grateful to my parents, who love me very much and support me in all my endeavors. (photo of Olya at the skating rink)

My dad Podgorodetsky Yuri Aleksandrovich works in construction company Leading Design Engineer. And in his free time from work and household chores, he enjoys modeling.

My mother Yulia Viktorovna Podgorodetskaya is a veterinarian by profession. Previously, she worked at the Regional Veterinary Laboratory in the virology department, but when I started school, she decided to leave her job and take up housekeeping, and she is good at it. My mother is a very tasty cook, loves to crochet, and in her free time she enjoys scrapbooking. And on Sunday, mom cooks some interesting and tasty dish and we all get together and have lunch. And this has already become our Sunday tradition.

During lunch we also talk, tell each other different events, and after lunch we can walk along the streets of our city. Or we can go on the weekend to my father’s mother, my grandmother Olga Ivanovna Podgorodetskaya, she works as an economist, although she is already retired. Or we can go to my mother’s parents, my grandmother Valentina Vasilievna Lachugina and my grandfather Viktor Semyonovich Lachugin. My grandmother is also retired, but works as a nurse in a physiotherapy office. And my grandfather used to work as a driver at Energonadzor. They live in Mednogorsk in a private house. And the house can rightfully be considered a family nest. My great-grandfather built it for his family. My grandmother Valya was born in this house, and then my mother.

2.2. The glorious past of our family

My great-grandfather Vasily Ivanovich Gordeev went to the front, leaving his wife Anna Vasilievna Gordeeva at home with her 4-year-old son in her arms. He defended his fatherland with the rank of guard sergeant major and was wounded in the lower jaw. In peacetime he worked as an electrician. My great-grandfather Semyon Nikolaevich Lachugin also defended his homeland from the Nazis with the rank of lieutenant, and after the war he worked as a welder at the housing and communal services in the city of Mednogorsk. And my great-grandfathers on my father’s side, Bronislav Petrovich Podgorodetsky, also fought the roads of the Patriotic War with the rank of an ordinary auto mechanic and was wounded in the back, and in peacetime he worked as a driver and lived in Semipalatinsk with his wife Anna Isaevna, who worked in the rear during the war years, and in peacetime - as a waitress. And great-grandfather Stolyarov Ivan Semenovich defended the Motherland from invaders with the rank of senior sergeant, and in peacetime he worked as a teacher, like his wife, Maria Nikolaevna Stolyarova.

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you about all my distant ancestors. I know that on my mother’s side, my great-great-grandfather Vasily Kuzmich Sherstnev and his wife, my great-great-grandmother Proskovya Rodionovna Sherstnyova, were the parents of my great-grandmother Anna Vasilievna. And the parents of my great-grandfather Vasily Ivanovich were my great-great-grandfather Ivan Petrovich Gordeev and his wife, and my great-great-grandmother Agafya Stepanovna, who lived well in those years because they worked a lot and were subject to dispossession. They took away all their livestock, a wooden table with wooden benches that my great-great-grandfather had made with his own hands.

Chapter III. My family coat of arms

Having described the history of my family, I wanted to draw a family coat of arms. And when I studied the rules for compiling it, this is what happened.

The basis of the coat of arms was the shield. Previously, in ancient times, it was a weapon of protection, and I took its form, which indicates the unity of our family. In the center - green meadow, the color of which signifies abundance, hope, freedom and joy. This is all in our family. Above the meadow I painted a blue sky with silver clouds, which is a symbol of beauty, nobility and truthfulness.

Why trees?

Because after studying the history of the family, I learned that my ancestors were working peasants. They lived in villages and lived difficult but honorable lives. That is why our coat of arms depicts trees - oaks, which symbolize perseverance, longevity and wisdom. In the upper corner of our coat of arms there is a sun with large rays, as a symbol of kindness, warmth, mercy and mutual understanding. There are three people in my family, and I painted four trees, because the cat that recently appeared with us has become a full member of our family. You can guess where someone is drawn by the color and height of the trunks and foliage of the trees. By depicting nature on the family coat of arms, I showed our hobbies. We like to relax in nature, travel by car across endless expanses and admire the beauty of our vast homeland.

In conclusion of the description of my family coat of arms, I came to the conclusion that there are rules that need to be known and followed when creating a coat of arms. And on it you need to depict only the most necessary and most important things.

While doing this work, I discovered a lot for myself interesting facts from the life of my ancestors. And as a result of the research, I came to the conclusion that all my great-grandfathers were brave and courageous people who fought during the Great Patriotic War. Patriotic War, and their wives, my great-grandmothers, worked in the rear under the motto “everything for the front” and waited for their husbands to come home safe and sound. And in times of peace, my ancestors worked honestly for the good of our Motherland. I am proud that in my family there are people from whom I want to take an example and I need to try to develop my abilities and talents, so that in the future my children and grandchildren will be proud of their ancestor, that is, me.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would like to say that ignorance of one’s ancestry leads to disrespect for one’s ancestors, and this is the first sign of immorality. And we also need to remember that the surname that is given to us is the surname of an entire family, your generation and your ancestors worked on this land, fought for their honor and wanted their family to be respected.

The glorious past of our family

By tracking them, you can learn a lot about yourself and adjust your own destiny. Even for those who still think little about their own origins, this information will be useful at least at the level of determining genetic predispositions to diseases.

But collecting and correctly filing information about your relatives is very difficult. In this article we will talk about how to correctly create a genealogical (pedigree) family tree with diagrams, examples and templates.

What is a family tree

A family tree is a conventional diagram that describes family ties within one family. It is often depicted as a real tree. Next to the roots is usually the ancestor or the last descendant, for whom a diagram is drawn up, and on the branches there are various lines of the genus.

In ancient times, preserving knowledge about one’s origin was a direct necessity for everyone. Already in Neolithic times, people knew that consanguineous marriages led to the appearance of non-viable children. Therefore, men took wives from neighboring villages, clans and tribes. However, sometimes it was necessary to preserve certain qualities within the line, and then people chose brides and grooms from among a limited circle. But in both the first and second cases, knowledge of one’s ancestors was mandatory.

In the past, blood (consanguinity) meant not only the presence of family ties, but also a certain psycho-emotional community, and in relation to representatives of the same family, the range of expectations from people was quite close.

This behavior has a basis. Have you noticed that there are families whose representatives of different lines and generations themselves choose similar directions of development. There are families in which everyone is connected with the arts, and there are those where, for generations, every second person has a penchant for engineering. And the point here is not only in upbringing, but also in the peculiarities of the functioning of the body. Genetic predisposition manifests itself not only in diseases, but also in the talents of representatives of the family line.

The childbirth system was also supported by the social structure. Most societies go through the stages of first a caste system, then a class system, then a class system. And marriages in them are usually arranged within their social circle.

Family history can shed light on many personal values. A lot is built into a person in the very early age using the example of the relationship between his parents and their relatives: patterns of behavior, structure of thinking, habits and words. But inheritance is not always direct. Studying the history of the family and recreating the family tree contributes to the self-identification of the individual and allows one to understand one’s personal foundations. This is useful both for the person himself and for the family as a whole. The process of collecting information and processing it will be useful for establishing contact between relatives.

There are several methods for compiling a family tree:

  • Rising. Here the chain is built in the direction from the descendant to the ancestors. The initial element is the outliner. The method is convenient for those who have just started studying their family. The compiler has information mainly about his immediate relatives: parents, grandparents, etc. - and gradually delves into the past.
  • Descending. In this case, the chain has the opposite direction. The origin is one ancestor (or spouse). For such a construction, you need to have fairly extensive information about your relatives.

When compiling a family tree, you need to take into account the lines of inheritance. They come in two types:

  • Direct branch. The chain includes you, your parents, their parents, etc.
  • Side branch. It takes into account your brothers and nephews, brothers and sisters of grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.

These schemes - ascending and descending with direct and lateral branches - can be compiled as mixed: for both men and women of the same clan, or to track inheritance only by the clan of the father or mother.

The family tree can be drawn up as follows:

The branching arrangement that is familiar to us, which is often complemented by a tree pattern. Suitable for designing genealogical diagrams of any degree of complexity.

  • You will draw your child's ascending family tree in this style.
  • Make a wonderful gift for a distant relative by drawing a common ancestor as the starting figure and building a descending system of connections from all first and second cousins.
  • Design the drawing in the form of an hourglass. This option is suitable for older relatives: grandfathers or great-grandfathers. Take them as key figures and make a family tree of these members of your family, combining the descending and ascending diagrams of parents and descendants in the drawing.

The “butterfly” scheme is inherently quite close to the “clock” option. Her starting point is the spouses, on both sides of them are the ascending family trees of their parents, and below them is the descending one.

There is another option for constructing the structure. It is not widespread in Russia, but allows you to create enough Full description family connections. This is the so-called circular table. It is also capable of accommodating an ascending and descending description of the genus.

  • For simple circuits you can take a quarter circle as a basis - a “fan” pattern.
  • There is an option to design an ascending or descending structure in the form of concentrated circles in which ancestors or descendants are inscribed.
  • Or the circle can be divided and a family tree of the family can be made, combining both directions of the family in a similar way to the “clock” template.

Any of the described options can be supplemented with photographs and notes.

How to create your own family tree

It is better to start your research with the family archive. See if you still have old photographs and official documents of your older relatives. Particularly useful documents will be: marriage or birth certificates, diplomas, certificates, work books, – since it is with their help that it is easiest to start searching in the archive. All papers and photographs should be scanned, saved somewhere in digital format and used in the future. And return the originals to their place so as not to lose this important evidence.

The next important step is interviewing relatives. And since relatives are not eternal, there is no point in delaying relations with him. In order not to overtire older people and not get confused yourself, it is important to outline the range of questions in advance. For example, when we are compiling a family tree, we should be interested in the following information:

  • When and where were certain relatives born?
  • Where and when did they work?
  • Time and place of study.
  • Who did you marry and when?
  • How many children did they have, their names and dates of birth.
  • If relatives have died, it is worth knowing when and where it happened.

As you can see, from the point of view of further searches, the most important information from the list is the place and time of certain events. Knowing them, you can go to the archives for documents.

But from a family point of view, it is much more important to hear stories about the lives of your relatives. Each family keeps its own traditions, in each there was something worthy of the memory of generations. Therefore, do not neglect long conversations about the past.

When collecting oral information, you should use a voice recorder so as not to miss a single detail.

It is important to structure all the information received competently and quickly, otherwise you will simply get confused in the intricacies of your family connections. You can store the information on paper in folders related to each line of the family. Or create a separate folder on your computer where you will place files about each of your relatives.

Some people research their ancestry for years, gradually deepening knowledge about their direct and indirect relatives.

But you can make the initial stages of the process faster; invite your family to participate with you in this important matter. If several people, each along their line, compile a list of their closest relatives with names, photographs and dates, and then combine all this information into a single diagram, you can get a family tree several generations deep in just a few months. In addition, such a decision will help to establish communication between individual branches of the family.

Services and programs that help you create a family tree

Collecting information about relatives is quite a difficult task. Simply because with each generation the number of people about whom information needs to be collected will increase exponentially. Even when using an ascending scheme, taking into account only direct branches, by the seventh generation you will count 126 ancestors.

Registration and storage of all this information using paper media is inconvenient. It is much easier to use electronic databases. You can create the necessary files yourself in Excel or Access. Or use specialized programs that are initially configured to make it as easy as possible to arrange information in your family, display and display it in a beautiful and understandable form.

There are many online services on pedigree topics. They will correctly compile your family tree, help you find information about relatives, and provide design samples.

  • Some of them provide the opportunity to create a diagram of your family online. On them, after free registration, you need to enter information about each relative, indicate his family connections, provide photographs, and the service itself will graphically build the necessary structure.
  • There are more professional sites with more settings. They automatically conduct additional analysis of the surname and even look for information in the archives.

A convenient solution, but, unfortunately, such services exist for a relatively short time, usually about 5 years, after which you will most likely lose access to the entered information.

  • For deeper work, it is better to use special programs that work independently of the Internet. They are paid and free. The latter have more limited functionality.
  • Or contact a special genealogy company, with its help, find information about your family ties, and beautifully arrange them into a family tree or

Can do it on his own. By the way, for reference:

Many psychologists, according to professional observations, describe those who do not know their relatives and their family history as less confident in life and, as a rule, having greater internal problems. Knowing your pedigree certainly includes knowing the interpretation of your surname. Still, it doesn’t hurt to know in detail what is our personal identifier, what we hear every day and pass on to our children as an inheritance.

There are several ways you can make your own family tree. Of these, the most common are:

  1. The first way is to do it virtually, on a computer.
  2. The second is to make it in reality, from a variety of available materials.

We will describe both methods and start with the first.

Creation of a virtual family tree.

Options are also possible here. One of them is to turn to the many free and not so free sites and communities where you can register and create your tree with pleasure and using built-in tools. Some communities even offer the function of “crossing” different family trees of members to find relatives.

The second option is to create a family tree using an editor on a computer (Photoshop, Corel, Paint). For help, you can use the article “Computer collage”. And also the following sequence of actions:

  1. We go to the Internet and look for a suitable picture of a tree to accomplish the task. In a few days (weeks) you will find a lot different options, some of which will form the basis of your design creation.
  2. Next, we methodically prepare photographs of our relatives. In this case, it is advisable to limit yourself to direct ancestors and their spouses, otherwise you will have to look for a completely different picture of the tree.
  3. Then we place them along the tree using any graphics program in which you enjoy working. You can add inscriptions under photographs, even mark the place of birth or some historical events (for example, resettlement and connections with a noble family).
  4. You can also draw a timeline along the side of the tree. This will very clearly show the development of the family against the background of history. You can also add your family coat of arms (if you have already acquired one), rare family photographs, a short information about the history of the family, and a link to your personal website on the Internet.

That is, with some imagination and a little time, you can make a beautiful family tree on the computer. And then, if desired, print it out on a large sheet of paper. But problems may arise with this, since professional printing requires large resolutions of drawings and photographs (300 pixels per inch), and if pictures and photographs are of lower resolution, then they may not look very beautiful when printed. Therefore, in this case, if you want to materialize a family tree, it is better to use the following sequence.

Creating a real family tree

In this case, you are doing nothing more than, so to improve the quality of your work, you can use the articles “Beautiful postcard in 5 minutes” and “Collage - how to make?”. Below is an example of creating a family tree from a piece of wallpaper, felt, photographs and patience. You will also need thick cardboard the size of the wallpaper, double-sided tape and glue.

The sequence of creating a real family tree is very simple:

  1. Draw the outlines of the tree (roots, trunk and branches) on felt with soap and cut it out.
  2. Cut a piece of 50 x 60 cm from the wallpaper. Glue the cut-out wallpaper onto the cardboard using glue or double-sided tape.
  3. Place felt wood on top and glue all thin parts with glue.
  4. Trim the excess protruding parts to fit the size of the base. Spray picture frames with spray paint and place them in a box with high sides to protect against splashes.
  5. Place the half-finished collage in a frame. Glue green yarn (threads, felt) to the top of the tree to imitate foliage.
  6. Insert photos into frames. Place them in the middle of the collage. Place children's photographs at the top, and photographs of grandparents at the bottom. Glue all the frames to the family tree with glue.

Thus, preparing a family tree is very simple.

The question remains - what to fill the family tree with?

Well, the simplest option is three generations:

  • grandparents
  • moms and dads
  • and children.

But you can make it even cooler. You can delve a little into the archives (grandmother’s old photo albums) and conduct an interview (talk to your grandparents). Usually such a conversation makes it possible to go 4-5 generations deep.

And finally, we invite you to download a small presentation (fully automatic) about the family tree. The basic terms are explained simply and clearly (because for children) and the sequence of creating a family tree with source codes is given. Download presentation You can follow the link: family tree.

How the entire process of drawing up a pedigree will go depends on your desires and capabilities. The results will largely be the embodiment of your zeal, ability to establish contacts and “detective” thinking. In any case, all the information will be of great value not only for you, but also for all subsequent generations of your big family. It is so important to remember those who were, take care of those who are and think about those who will be.

Where to start making a family tree? My experience.

A pedigree, or as they used to say, a genealogy, is a series of parents and children, where basic information is provided about each.

If we start recording with ourselves, then we consider ourselves the first generation, our mother and father - second, the parents of each of them (grandparents) - the third and so on. This kind of pedigree is called mixed.

It is best to start compiling a pedigree with a mixed ascending pedigree.

Firstly, this type of pedigree usually begins to be compiled from the memory of its living members of the clan.

Secondly, mixed ascending ancestry is the original kind of ancestry. Without it, one cannot begin to compile a descending pedigree.

The descending pedigree includes many more generations than are usually retained in memory.

If you only make up your mixed ascending ancestry, then you will already be doing a great job for yourself, for your family, even for the history of the time in which you live. After all, you will collect information and documents that, perhaps, cannot be found in any archives.

What does it take to create your mixed ascending ancestry? First of all, you need to prepare for this work

How I prepared.

1. From the very beginning I got myself a good folder, measuring 33x23 cm with split rings.

2. I prepared 2 dozen envelopes slightly larger than a sheet of writing paper. Available at the post office (Art. 3319r, size 32.5x22.5) They need to be redone so that they open from the side that measures 22.5. And on the larger side, use a hole punch to make holes for filing in a folder.

3. I put my notes, letters, family documents, photographs in these envelopes. It is better to write inscriptions on envelopes about what they contain in pencil. It’s better if the envelope is transparent, you can immediately see what’s inside. These plastic envelopes with a button are sold. This is even better, nothing will fly out.

Now that everything is ready, you can begin to compile a pedigree.

Stage 1

I found out from my relatives (mothers, fathers, grandfathers and grandmothers) the names and patronymics of their parents. I also found out the maiden names of the women of the family. I wrote all this down on a separate sheet of paper under the title List No. 1

Then I compiled List No. 2. Records are kept here about all the brothers and sisters of older family members, their wives and husbands, as well as their parents.

Then begin collecting information about each family member. On a separate sheet of paper I wrote:

1.Last name, first name, patronymic of a relative

2.Day, month and year of his birth, place of birth

3. For those who are no longer alive, the date, month and year of death, where they were buried.

4. Last name, first name, patronymic of the father of this relative.

5. Last name, first name, patronymic of the mother.

6. Last names, first names, patronymics of the recipients, i.e. godfather and godmother

7. Estate, for those born before 1917, indicate: peasants, townspeople, merchants, clergy, nobles.

8. Place or places of residence and in what years.

9. What religion was he assigned to at birth and later (Orthodox, Catholic, Megamethane, Jewish, etc.) or does not belong to any.

10. Where you were brought up, what kind of education you received.

11. Places of work or service, ranks and positions.

12. Did you participate in wars and battles? When and where.

13.What awards does he have or have had (insignia, medals, orders)

14. Last name, first name, patronymic of the wife (husband).

15 Names and dates of birth of children (day, month, year).

This information is stored in an envelope pinned in a folder

Do not forget to make a note after each information you record, from whom it was received and the date of recording.

Naturally, you can write down information about yourself on points 1,2,4,5,8,9, perhaps 6 and partly 10.. Don’t be upset if you can’t find information on all points. Complete information about each person can be collected very rarely.

Stage 2

I am sure that after reading the above information, you imagined a table littered with a pile of papers, and your optimism probably diminished. And completely in vain. Compiling your pedigree on paper has been a thing for a long time now. days gone by. IN this moment There are a great many software products that allow you to create a family tree at an almost professional level. Moreover, there are programs that allow you to automatically create family websites.

I put everything that I “dug up” into a table. I used the FamilyFreeBuilder program. It allows you to create and edit a family tree, store family photos, documents, videos. You can find out about it here. Download it for yourself, you won’t regret it. Take your lists and put them in a table. Don't be embarrassed if you can't fill everything out right away.

Finding out your ancestry means finding out your origins. This may be relevant for bearers of famous surnames, for people whose ancestors were famous people.

But even those without famous and historical ancestors often want to know their own genealogy in order to confirm or refute various family stories passed down from generation to generation.

It is better to learn and comprehend the history of your family in order to find your roots, understand the meaning of your own actions and character traits - all this will help you create a family tree.

How to create a family tree

Information about the pedigree must be somehow systematized and presented as clearly and aesthetically as possible. Genealogical data obtained through research can be presented in different formats, but the most popular presentation is the family tree.

Information about several generations can be presented in various forms.

  • Only direct descendants are represented– the tree is highly branched, the outer level includes a large number of Human.
  • All known ancestors represented– the tree has cut off side branches to present information as compactly as possible.
  • The tree includes all family members with the same surname– branches of married relatives along the female line are cut off.

Systematization criteria may be different, and depending on the chosen option, the design of the family tree is selected.

Even small-scale genealogical research can involve a large amount of information found.
What can we say about a full study in which the genus is restored to the 10-12th generation.

In any case, storing public information will require the use of an organized methodological approach. And to display the visual, the design of the family tree is important.

Designer family tree diagram

This type of design is a layout that is made individually for each family. Photo paper or foam board serves as the basis for the layout. The size can be different - it depends on the number of people included in the tree diagram and the degree of its branching.

The basic version of the tree design includes the work of a historian to systematize information about all relatives known to you, the development of an individual tree layout, design and printing of the tree on photographic paper (format: 61x200 cm) or foam board (format: from 56x84 cm to 1200x1200 cm).
