It should be noted that the custom of caroling has now been preserved, I am sure, only in the deep provinces, in villages and hamlets, where everyone knows each other. And most often, children carol, although in the distant past adults also loved to have fun, dressing up as “mummers” and going around relatives and neighbors with the “Christmas Star.”
So, Kolyada rules the world, and in all Slavic countries, carols and schedrivkas sound merrily in Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian. Each country has its own flavor, its own customs and its own songs, but they are united by the bright holiday of Christmas and the wish to live peacefully, richly and happily.

The holiday began decorously - with dinner in the family home. A woman, a respected head of the family (Bolshakha), was baking round bread: with a wooden spatula she pressed it into test grooves in the form of an oblique cross and then placed the bread under Russian stove. At the end of the meal, the children took part of the remaining kutya to their grandparents, as well as to the homes of the poor, so that they too could celebrate. Neither the food nor the tablecloth were removed until the morning, believing that the souls of the deceased parents would come to the table to eat too.

The day for the sparrow's leap has arrived and the winter sun is beginning to flare up. Kolyada in Slavic mythology is the embodiment of the New Year's cycle. One of the most characteristic features of Christmastide (as well as Maslenitsa) is dressing up, wearing sheepskin coats with the wool up, wearing animal masks and noisy carnival dances in houses and on the streets. They dress up as a bear, horse, bull, goat, goose, crane. The carolers themselves (mummers) should be unrecognized. During the appearance of the mummers, skits and sometimes entire performances were performed. They acted out a mock funeral and wedding, a recruitment drive, a fair, a blacksmith's shop and fishing, and they "drove" a goat, a mare, and a turon.

Among the ancient Slavs, Kolyada was the holiday of the born sun, the birthday of the solar year. On the night of Kolyada, bonfires were lit (they lit a sacred fire in the ancient way, which burned for 12 days), they danced around them, and rolled a burning wheel down from the mountains with sayings. In the old days, on Kolyada, a ritual of renewing the Fire was performed: all the Fires in the village were extinguished, and with the help of friction, a New one was produced (otherwise - Living). A ritual fire was lit with the New Fire (in which it was customary to burn old things - to cleanse them of things that had outlived their usefulness), and after that the Fire spread throughout the hearths of the home. At the same time, a burning wheel was rolled down the mountain - a symbol of the growing strength of the Sun.
In a day winter solstice Sheaves and dolls are brought to houses and songs are sung - carols with wishes for the well-being of the home and with requests for gifts - loaves and pies, promising poverty to the stingy. Carolers dress up as a bear, horse, goat, cow, and this is an ancient symbol of abundance. Boys and girls “dress up in hari (masks)” of horses, goats, cows, bears and other animals, and the mummers walk around the courtyards, singing carols - songs glorifying Kolyada, who brings good to everyone. They praise the owners, wish well-being to the home and family, and in return they demand gifts, jokingly predicting ruin for the stingy. Previously, sometimes the gifts themselves: cookies, loaves of bread were called Kolyada. Kolyada was symbolized by a sheaf or a straw doll, which was sometimes brought to the hut with songs at Christmas. The ritual of caroling consisted of a kind of exchange of gifts, gift for gift. The carolers “gave” prosperity to the peasant house for the whole year, and the owners gave them kozulki, as well as pies, cheesecakes, beer, and money.
It is worth saying that in many areas of Russia, bread products were considered the main gift. On the eve of Christmas, kozulki were baked especially for distribution to carolers. Carol songs have always been varied. And this diversity depended on in which area, even in which region, caroling took place.

During the celebration of the carol, the ritual “Feeding the Frost” was also performed. Ritual vessels with water from 12 wells were used, and a song was sung to the bread. In later times, fortune telling turned into a ritual, and in some places simply into a game. The purpose of fortune telling is to find out about a girl's fate. They told fortunes using a dish of silent water, decorations, and dishes-based songs. The sub-dish songs that have come down to us contain spells: “To whom we sing, good will come to him, it will inevitably happen” and choruses: “Glory”, “My Word”, “Lada”, “Holy Evening”, “Ileyu” (from Ilya).
