How does toner differ from paint?

Tonic is a cosmetic product designed to change the original hair color by one or more shades. Unlike paint, tonic unable to lighten dark strands. But, at the same time, it does not destroy the structure of the hair, does not make it brittle and thin. The tonic only covers the hairs with a thin layer of dye.

After dyeing with tonic, the hair does not require additional care with special products.

Basic rules for color selection

Tonic is considered sufficient safe means. However, before you dye your hair with it, to achieve a noticeable effect, you should take into account several nuances:

  • If you are going to color your strands after lightening or highlighting, try applying the tonic to a separate strand first and see if you are satisfied with the result.
  • If you just want to refresh or brighten your natural hair color, then the right decision would be to choose a toner one or two shades darker than your curls.
  • Do not use light shades of tonic on dark hair. In this case, you risk simply not seeing any effect.
  • Before purchasing the product, carefully study the table of examples with the original hair colors and those obtained after dyeing (the manufacturer usually places it on the packaging).
  • To create a fashionable effect of burnt ends, choose several shades that are similar in tone.
  • For bolder coloring, you can choose the most daring combinations of bright colors.

Dyeing process

If you decide to dye your hair at home, then you need to know how to use hair tonic correctly.

To start examine the contents of the package hair tonic. As a rule, manufacturers, in addition to the coloring composition itself, complete their product with everything necessary: disposable gloves, after-coloring care product, and detailed instructions.

Carefully read the instructions supplied by the manufacturer; they describe in detail how to properly dye your hair with tonic yourself at home.

Mix the ingredients of the coloring composition in a non-metallic container until smooth, and test for possible allergic reactions.

You can apply tonic to your strands using brushes or sponges, starting from roots to tips. After all curls have been processed, comb them with a wide-tooth comb to better distribute the composition along the entire length of the hair, including the ends.

The toner should also be washed off correctly, with plenty of water, until it becomes completely transparent. Otherwise, you risk seeing paint marks on bedding or clothing.

You need to apply the tonic to strands that have been cleanly washed with shampoo. There is no need to dry your hair, just lightly pat it dry with a towel. Moisture is left on the curls so that the coloring occurs evenly. Otherwise, the tonic will color the hairs very quickly, and as a result you may get a darker shade in those areas where the composition was applied earlier. For example, the roots of your hair will be darker than the ends.

Owners of porous bleached strands may be advised to use a hair mask or balm before applying tonic. This will protect the hair shaft from deep penetration of the coloring pigment inside.

Tonic is an excellent way to try on fashionable hair coloring with a transition from one hair color at the roots to another at the ends. You can do this yourself at home using little tricks.

Before applying the coloring composition, you can divide your hair into small strands and tie them at the desired height with thin elastic bands. After this, apply the tonic only to that part of the curl that is below the elastic band, that is, to the ends. In this case, you can make a relatively smooth color transition line.

Remember that the tonic is washed off quite easily and quickly, so you can experiment with it.

For example, do not bother yourself with creating an even transition line, but deliberately dye the ends of your hair to different heights, thereby obtaining a “ragged” coloring.

What to do if the result does not meet expectations

The main advantage of the tonic is that even if you decide to experiment with color, but it turns out that the shade you chose doesn’t suit you at all, don’t despair! Everything can be quickly fixed with the help of special products that help wash off the pigment, or a mask made from simple available ingredients.

Ordinary kefir from your refrigerator, applied to tonic-dyed strands for 1.5-2 hours can completely remove the consequences of your experiment.

In addition to kefir, a mask can easily correct the situation from burdock oil and lemon juice. They must be taken in equal proportions and applied to tonic-dyed strands for 1 hour. Afterwards, wash your hair with warm water and regular shampoo.

But even if you do nothing, the tonic will be washed off with regular shampoo in just a couple of weeks.

Despite the fact that tonic is considered a safe hair coloring agent, you should not overuse it. Its composition, although in very small quantities, contains substances that can harm the strands if used frequently. Therefore, choose the color carefully, strictly follow the instructions, and then you will not need to use toner more than once every 2 weeks.
